[SOLVED] HP Printer stuck on "processing" stage. Does not print

Hi there,

I just got a used HP DeskJet 5150 and just set up hplip and CUPS. I tried using the web interface first and selected the HP DeskJet 5100 hpijs driver. Evidently the 5100 driver supports the 5150 model. I tried to print and nothing happened. Nothing in the error log in /var/log/cups/error_log either. It's just stuck on "processing". I also tried setting it up via the hplip hp-setup utility with the same result. I've also tried restarting the printer and also restarted the CUPS daemon. Still not fixed. The hp-setup utility used the DeskJet 5199 hpcups driver. So both the hpijs and hpcups drivers didn't fix the problem. Each time I went to test to see if the printer was working, I used the "Print test page" function in the CUPS web interface. The user was root that printed. CUPS version is 2.2.1-1 and hplip version is 3.16.10-2. Both are the latest versions. This is arch x86_64.

Thanks

It might be wrong driver. See in /etc/cups/ppd/ if you can find another ppd file for your printer, and try this.

Re: [SOLVED] HP Printer stuck on "processing" stage. Does not print

According to this page, the 5100 driver supports the 5150 model (as well as others). That said, there are 2 drivers for the 5100 series. The first is the hpijs driver, and the 2nd is the hpcups driver. I've tried both. There are not any other drivers that are as close to the model number as "HP DeskJet 5100". Below it are the "HP DeskJet 4720" series drivers and above it are the "HP DeskJet 5400" series drivers. Also according to that page, the earliest version of hplip that supports these drivers is 0.9.5 whereas I have the newest version which is 3.16.10-2. Not sure what's going on.

Run hp-check and look for errors.
You should also see this troubleshooting list

Re: [SOLVED] HP Printer stuck on "processing" stage. Does not print

Nothing comes up in hp-check. Ended up installing the hp plugin with hp-plugin and that finished. Also installed sane, sane-frontends, and xsane because hp-check asked for it. I know that's for scanning, but it couldn't hurt to install it so I did. I plugged the USB cable into another port and restarted cups after doing all that and tried to print again. Nothing. I also followed that troubleshooting list and that didn't help.

No answer; but fishing for more information....

Is this connected via USB or are you using an optional network connection?  And is it connected to your system or are you using another computer as a print server.

It's connected via USB and it's connected to the computer I'm printing from (my main system).

That is the path of least resistance.   Have you tried any foomatic drivers?  (foo2zjs-nightly from the AUR)

Try installing foomatic-db, it might have a better driver for that printer.

Re: [SOLVED] HP Printer stuck on "processing" stage. Does not print

I ran foomatic-compiledb and while there's /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/HP-DeskJet_5150.xml, it doesn't compile it into a ppd for some reason. Tried running it as root and it still didn't generate the corresponding ppd.

Re: [SOLVED] HP Printer stuck on "processing" stage. Does not print

I was going crazy trying to get my Brother HL2140 Laser printer to work until I installed foomatic-db, (it's not listed in the cups wiki). From there I went to localhost:631 and modified the printer under administration. That's where I found a foomatic driver for my Brother printer. Unfortunately, that is all the knowledge I have on this, but it works!!

Re: [SOLVED] HP Printer stuck on "processing" stage. Does not print

Yeah I installed foomatic-db though and there's just no ppd for my model printer. There's an XML for the printer, but the command that generates the ppd files is foomatic-compiledb and it didn't build the one for my printer for some reason hmm

Re: [SOLVED] HP Printer stuck on "processing" stage. Does not print

Figured it out! Had nothing to do with drivers. I ran hp-info and I found that the status of the printer was "pen change". Looking "pen change" up, I found that it means that the cartridges aren't properly installed. The reason for this was most likely that I was moving the printer from one house to another and one of the cartridges became ajar. I readjusted them and closed the top cover and it started to work. Yay
