Linux compatibility with USB 3.0 port replicator docks

I'm wondering if anyone here has had success using a USB 3.0 port replicator with Arch Linux.

I'm travelling more often these days, and I'd like to have access to my system while I'm on the road. I have a desktop running Arch, but since experiencing the convenience of a laptop docking station, I'm considering ditching the desktop for a laptop. I'm asking about USB 3.0 docks because they're cheaper than proprietary docks, and I can select any laptop vs having to select an expensive laptop that supports a proprietary dock.

I've came across articles/pages on ArchWiki, Linux.org, DisplayLink forum, Stack Overflow, and...well...Google in general. From what I've read, USB 3.0 / DisplayLink doesn't work well with Linux. I haven't found a Linux user that reported success using one of these USB 3.0 port replicators, so I thought I should double-check with the community to see if it's been done.

I believe my hopes are a little high with these USB 3.0 port replicators.
