Is there a way to set caffeine to disable screensaver by default (at login/startup)? I can't find a settings file anywhere.

This sounds like an XY problem. Why do you think caffeine is relevant? Can you disable xscreensaver (assuming that's the screen save you're referring to) - absolutely, just don't run xscreensaver.
When *do* you want xscreensaver to run? Only when manually triggered? If so, configure xscreensaver for that, not caffeine. If never, then uninstall xscreensaver.

I use caffeine together with an indicater extension in gnome to change the screensaver behaviour whenever I need, e.g. displaying something I need while working on another computer. I'm quite satisfied with that, but everytime I login the indicator is set to OFF (screensaver is allowed), which I'd like to change if possible.
