Basically, subject. Editing /etc/default/grub like here didn't seem to help. Here's a full session log:

I've had this problem for several months now.

Can you explain your problem a little better. How do you try to shut down, reboot xfce? What is exactly the issue you observe? Does it works consistently on the second try or does it work at random one time out of two?

I mean I have to press a button on the session menu twice like in the issue report I linked. Yes, it works pretty consistently only on second try.

In my case, I have to enable it in te power manager section of Xfce. It works only a few seconds after having logged in. The power button is ignored for the first few seconds (but then works on the first try). Probably Xfce has to initialize something. Can you try to log in, wait 30s and press the power button? Do you have modified something in the default configuration?
Updated: Sorry, I misread your post, you mean the button on the dialog box, I was speaking about the physical power button. What happens if your issue the poweroff command? What exactly does happen when you press the button the first try? Have you any error message?

I had the same problem (on several computers, with lighdm and without, started by startx).
But the problem goes away by itself in recent weeks.

It shuts down using terminal fine. Some applications get closed.

OK, I've now realized that I simply can't log out when GoldenDict is running and not minimized to system tray which is done with the first button press.
EDIT: Can anyone reproduce this? I'm not sure whose bug this is even supposed to be.

I confirm. Yes, indeed, the problem occurs when GoldenDict is running and not minimized to system tray.
