detecting hardware issues using archlinux live usb

I'm trying to repair my girlfriend's Asus x501A laptop.
It had Windows 7 installed and the battery kept draining fast and getting BSOD so I ordered a new one and had it replaced.
After the replacement it still kept getting BSOD so I took the chance and installed ubuntu.
There were some issues with the installation - I got an error in the middle of it.
So I'm currently using a usb live but I want to fix it.
I have a feeling that it's the disk but I want to make sure before spending any money on it.
What tests can I run? Currently I'm running the memtest86 coming with the usb live, how long does it take and what results should be okay?
I should also mention that the laptop gets pretty hot at the bottom when used (under the fan) and I can't feel much air comming out of it.

Edit:
Memtest86 passed and everything was ok.
During the test the cpu reached 85 degrees but I checked and it's normal, though it's the highest before reaching critical heat.
I boot into arch usb and ran fdisk but found only the usb device, same with lsblk.
Is it possible that the hard drive is indeed dead?
