It seems to me that texlive-fontsextra is partially broken, that is, the newtxmath package seems to be corrupted as some fonts are missing.
Compiling the newtx.tex example document provided at http://www.tug.dk/FontCatalogue/newtx/ results in the error:
kpathsea: Running mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 0+480/600 --dpi 480 txsys
mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for txsys. mktexpk: perhaps txsys is missing from the map file.
kpathsea: Appending font creation commands to missfont.log.
----
The missfont.log reads:
mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 0+480/600 --dpi 480 txsys
mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 0+480/600 --dpi 480 txsys
mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 0+480/600 --dpi 480 txsys
The complete compilation log newtx.log
I fixed the issue by downgrading to texlive-fontsextra-2016.41439-2-any.pkg.tar.xz, but maybe someone has a more sustainable solution?

Can confirm:
mktexpk --mfmode / --bdpi 600 --mag 2+44/600 --dpi 1244 rm-lmbx12
mktexpk: don't know how to create bitmap font for rm-lmbx12.
mktexpk: perhaps rm-lmbx12 is missing from the map file.
And reverting to previous release, as you said, fixes it.

Cannot confirm. Works fine here.
But when I had such problems after previous updates I alway deleted a file named pdftex.map in a subdirectory with -var in its pathname.
Edit: I think this on should go away:
/var/lib/texmf/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map

I'm not sure if it's related but I'm also having issues with texlive-fontsextra. Trying to compile tex document that previously compiled just fine gives folowing error:
main.tex:143: pdfTeX error (font expansion): auto expansion is only possible with scalable fonts.
main.tex:143: leading text: \end{figure}
Downgrading to previous version fixes the issue.

What font do you try to use? And what font are you actually using? I guess there is a difference. The logfile will tell you.
And deleting /var/lib/texmf/fonts/map/pdftex/updmap/pdftex.map will most likely solve it.

I was using Latin Modern. But thanks, deleting the file (or link) solved the problem I was having.

Same here. For some reason re-updating the package seems to have solved the problem.
Thanks.
