pdf convert tool

Hi,

I'm looking for a console based tool that lets me convert pdf files to pdf files with a specified pdf version.
The goal is to convert a bunch of pdf documents to PDF/A1 for long term storage.

Libreoffice seems to support this but I would prefer a smaller tool for exactly this task.

Unfortunately the poppler library does not seem to support the creation of new pdf files with any tools.

Re: pdf convert tool

Have you tried searching the web for "convert pdf to pdf/a1 linux"? I just tried this and got several hits that indicate ghostscript may be able to do this.

Re: pdf convert tool

ps2pdf can readily convert between different pdf numbered versions.  Despite the name, it readily works on pdf files as well as ps input.  However, ghostscript cannot convert a non A1 source to A1.  It seems it can mark a file as A1, but the file will not be fully A1 conformant.

How strictly do these need to be A1?  Are you just looking to make them smaller for archiving?  Or do you need all the features defined in the A1 spec?

Re: pdf convert tool

Yeah those ghostscript solutions all have some drawbacks.
I need the files to be strictly A1 conformant, which unfortunately make them larger as fonts are included.
