I need a new solution for an old problem

So i ran pacman -Syu for a system upgrade. went to reboot and ran into this

Warning: /lib/modules/4.8.10-1-ARCH/modules.devname not found - ignoring
starting version 218
ERROR: device 'UUID=089e48f3-5c25-411f-88da-9e8c58ab9438' not found. Skipping fsck.
ERROR: Unabel to find device 'UUID=089e48f3-5c25-411f-88da-9e8c58ab9438'.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
sh: can't access tty: job control turned off

After a quick search I've found several people with similar problems and many of them marked as SOLVED but provided no solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Sounds like you are loading an old initramfs, version 218 was a long time ago.

How do i update it? I have loaded a live USB and cant seem to get the mkinitcpio to create a new one. So Im kind of a loss as to how to build a new initramfs.

Why won't mkinitcpio make a new one?

It's weird, doesn't mkinitcpio get called automatically after kernel update? So there really has to be an issue with mkinitcpio in your case. Post the output pls.

Re: I need a new solution for an old problem

How long ago was your last full update ?

Latest kernels use a pacman hook to run mkinitcpio,  are you running a pre-5.01 pacman ?

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Re: I need a new solution for an old problem

Using 'mkinitcpio -P' should still work just fine. I suspect the OP is forgetting to mount /boot in the right place before using chroot/nspawn and recreating the initramfs.

That said, it does look like quite an old install so updating directly to the latest package versions may not work and leave things broken.
