thank you, that worked for me too. I wonder why mirrors can have such problems and are these being fixed?

It's hard to say what causes the problems. It could have been a blip in the network on that host or the one it was syncing from, it could be filesystem corruption, the mirror could have developed a fault in it's RAM, rsync might've crashed mid-write, etc. You can see a list of reported errors here, but error messages don't show the full picture.
