GDM gives black screen, LightDM does not

Hello,

I've been wanting to switch from LightDM to GDM for a while now, but for some reason my laptop dislikes it. My desktop PC (using an AMD GPU) seems to be running GDM fine. When I start GDM using

systemctl start gdm

the screen goes black and I am no longer able to do anything on that TTY. Everything installed is fully up to date and switching back to LightDM allows everything to function fine.

My laptop specs:
CPU: Intel i7-6700k
GPU: Geforce GTX 960M + some integrated Intel chip (using the proprietary NVIDIA driver)

I'd appreciate any help in getting GDM working on my laptop.
Thanks!
