[SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Hello all,
for long time i'm working on this one... would be great to solve this:
I build a new skylake machine in Jan and until now i am not able to use the suspend function in the latest kernel...
To troubleshoot i installed a brand new system "the arch way" on a test partition... Even on the clean base system i have the problem.
Here is the journal log after the command "systemctl suspend".
There have been almost no modifications to the base install. i tried to insert options enable_fbc=1 and semaphores=1 to mod i915, no help, these are still in there...

Note: The LTS Kernel 4.4.13 seems to work. But if it is longer times in suspend mode (several hrs) it will freeze anyway. I will make some tests with this in suspend to disk mode.

Thank you for help,
  Daniel

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Further troubleshooting:
i found, that there is still a bug in the latest kernels for the i915 module pending. (DRM... something) So i wait for this to be solved.

For another approach i built in a nvidia 970 graphics card and tested the suspend problem with it. Same, same...
When the machine is in suspend for a short time, it comes back... when it's longer (several hours) it will freeze on resuming... sometimes it is possible to change to a virtual console and do a reboot, but not always...

where do i start troubleshooting this? (i deachtivated the onboard intel graphics, so the still pending kernel bug should not be the problem...)

i worked through the suspend artikel in the wiki... i am using the lts kernel. do i need any special packages for the suspend to work?

in the bios i can swith the wakup events betwenn bios and os, what should i choose?

Thanks for any help,
Daniel.

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Same problem here since a few kernels ago (don't remember exactly which one), but on very old hardware - AMD Athlon64 x2 5000+ and nVidia 8600GT with nouveau and Plasma desktop. You can try to suspend with 's2ram -f -a (1) or (2)'. It does resume sometimes when it's suspended longer, but not always.

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

OK.
I will now try suspend to disk the next days and report. how this works on resume...
With the xfce4 power manager it worked ok the last few times. Is there a difference whether suspending with the command line and "systemctl suspend" or with the xfce4 power manager?

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Suspend to Disk works fine. Still working on the suspend to RAM issue... where should i start troubleshooting??? there are no errors in the logs.
I also opened a topic in the MSI Forum for the Z170A Mainboard, because i noticed, when i use the XMP Mode for the RAM, the Suspend to RAM works never. When i use the normal mode, it works sometimes... sad((

Where to start? I installed Kubuntu on a different partition, same problem... under i3 and xfce, same problem... i tried to install and remove the acpid package... no help

Is it a screenlocker issue?

Are there any packages missing?

I installed a brandnew arch system on a new partition, same problem... sad

The NumLock Key does not respond after coming back from S2RAM to the black screen...

Thanks for help,

  Daniel.

PS: Has Anybody the Z170A Chipset with the Skylake 6600K CPU running and S2RAM works?

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Try adding the i8042.nomux=1 as a kernel option to the bootloader. After several months of troubles, this seems to work ok (several successful wakeups , even after long time).  See the 'Resume from suspend shuts down instead of wake up' topic in the pm-utils arch-wiki.  Also read more at http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … -of-ubuntufor an explanation. Maybe it has something to do with this https://www.archlinux.org/news/linux-31 … w-modular/.

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Sorry, i really want to get this working, otherwise i will definitely change my cpu...

Is it possible, that there is a new CPU Gen. coming out in Summer 2015 (skylake) and after more than one year the suspend function is not working with the linux kernel??? no, thats definitely not possible... there must be some other problem in my system. i just installed a manjaro on a new i5-6400 system for a friend (ideacenter 300S) and it works just fine...?

Could i change a bios option to solve this? Unfortunately i have no option "failsave defaults" in my bios, only "optimized defaults"... with this it does not work.
But there are a lot of options for "cpu functions" - is there something i could try?

c1e support
c1-c8 power states
etc pp.

does anybody have an idea?

Thank you very much,

  Daniel.

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Wild shot: add "dis_ucode_ldr" to the kernel parameters (this disables microcode loading and *was* a bug causing described symptoms *in the past*)

Hi Seth!

it seeeems that you made my day (night)!!!

looks good until now without the microcode loading before the initrd...

i do some testing...

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Do you have https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr … tel-ucode/ installed? Up-to-date? (I refuse to believe they broke it again ;-)
Though this seems like a candidate: https://lkml.org/lkml/2016/3/14/393

Please call back in a few days to rule out false positives.

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Unfortunately... no help... sad

the skylake cpu doesn't need the microcode update... i removed the entry anyway, but the successful resumes afterwards must have been good luck...

i really don't know how to solve this sh...t. I installed a debian jessy with xfce and gnome on another partition, same same... sad

mostly it happens on the 2nd or 3rd suspend-resume cycle...

I try bios options now, as i did before the microcode hint, i reduced the maximum powersaving state to C3 to see, if there is any help. Are there any ideas about other bios options, that could help?

I really cannot get this into my head, that this basic function should not work... if thats really true, i will definitely change the hardware, i don't wai until Kernel "5.2" if it really is a kernel issue...

Daniel. sad

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Just to be sure: the µcode isn't required to have the µcode loader fail, ie. if disabling it did "fix" it for you and the problem didn't re-occur before you removed the entry, this is it. Regardless on whether your CPU required µcode updates (I just speculated this might be due to wonky µcode rather than the loader bein broken... again)

=> So please confirm that the kernel hangs despite "dis_ucode_ldr" was passed to the kernel?
(if you edited grub on boot, notice that the change isn't persistent)

I'm not sure that switching random HW will fix it - not until one knows the exact cause of the problem (eg. could be some USB device or whatnot)

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Yes, i confirm... no help. i passed the kernel parameter... last test i resumed 2 times with the 4.7.6 Kernel and it won't resume on the 3rd attempt. Now it quit at the first attempt...

It always changes, that's what surprises me. i cannot reproduce it for shure. Sometimes it happens on the 1st attempt, 2nd or 3rd... sad

i use the hibernation now and try if it works consistently...

memory decay. since you mentionen xmp, do you overclock/voltage memory? did you try to relax memory related settings in BIOS?

Yes. I put everything back to defaults... Could it be a voltage thing (cpu or dram)? i will ask the bios question additionally in the MSI Forums...

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

The information is stored in RAM, it works when stored on disk and the reliability diminishes when you enable autoperformance tuning and apparently increases the longer the suspend lasts.
Smells a lot like wonky power supply to the RAM to me, yes (and there're such reports and mentions in board FAQs, notably reg. xmp)

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Try the following:

1.remove the autodetect hook from mkinitcpio.conf and rebuild.
2.disable any udev rule that has something to do with suspending ( i had the following): # This rule disables asynchronous suspend of scsi bus devices (sata drives). This fixes the problem with random unsucessful suspends.
#ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="scsi", ENV{DEVTYPE}=="scsi_target", ATTR{power/async}="disabled".

3.use pm-suspend

Now suspending takes more time (about 30 sec) than previous, probably because it takes longer to save the system state properly. Every wakeup has been sucessfull untl now, but i'll post tommorow about this solution working after a long suspend.

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Hi Max,

thanks for answering... unfortunately, no help ... sad

tried the -failsafe image (without the autodetect hook)
grep'ed all the .rules files for "power"... nothing relevant.
installed pm-suspend, same behaviour...

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Now almost a year with my new system, but still no suspend...
i really want to work this out from ground up, so i installed one fresh arch install (base only) and one debian 8 install on parallel partitions...

the behaviour on the debian 8 with xfce is the same like in my arch xfce or my arch kde, one or two successful resumes from suspend2ram, then wakeup with blackscreen and numlock blocked...

on the arch base install i get a resume with a black screen, but numlock is working and when i press the power button i can shutdown blindly.

i worked on the voltages in bios for the dram, putting them on manual, increasing and decreasing them, no help, so i quit this...

where could i continue troubleshooting??? This must be something very basic, because it's the same behaviour in a deb. jessy install and also quite similar in an arch base install...

could it be a nvidia "video bios resume thing"? i have the "nvidia-drm.modeset=1" kernel option set, but also tried without of course...

i don't think it's a kernel thing, i am using 4.8... and 4.4...LTS latest ones in the meanwhile...

i really don't know where to look further... sad(( (like i wrote, changed hardware whith different chipsets also, same same...)

Thanks again from Wuerzburg,

  Daniel.

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Now i tracked the problem down to the nvidia module!
When i use the nouveau module in my base arch setup, well, it works just fine... smile
Of course i dont want to switch all the time between the two...
I use the latest lts kernel and latest nvidia package.

downgrading:
does somebody run the 970 card with nvidia module and lts kernel successfully with suspend to ram? which versions do you run?
so i would downgrade my system...

nvidia tuning, systemd resume hook:
has  anybody a working nvidia / lts suspend solution with a resume hook, that solves the nvidia black screen issue on resume? i'm looking for a solution the initiate a graphics initialization after resuming? how can i do that? does it help?

otherwise, lets keep waiting... there are also some nvidia bug reports going on in the nvidia dev forum... sad

thanks a lot for help,

  Daniel.

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

What's the output of "dmesg | grep -i nvrm" (right after boot, srt isn't required)
Also, does this happen when using icewm or fluxbox as (more or less) "desktop environment" resp. when suspending the xfce compositor?

Re: [SOLVED] Hangup on suspend

Yes. this is totally independant of DE/WM used... i can reproduce this in new fresh debian jessy env. or in a base arch install WITHOUT graphical interface...
Its a nvidia driver problem. When i change to nouveau... no prob!
This is really poor for a proprietory driver like nvidia!

I will get a Radeon RX 480 next week... if this is working fine, i will sell off my 970 to ebay... i handle this shit now since Jan when i built up my skylake rig. I really don't like to troublesh this any more. If a driver cannot handle a simple system suspend, trash it!

I mark this as solved now, if nobody has more ideas...

Daniel.
