[SOLVED] Sound stopped working when installed PulseAudio

Hello arch community,

I decided to install pulseaudio because I wasn't satisfied with my life without any problems to figure out. I had sound normally when I had only alsa but when I installed pulseaudio the sound stopped working.

It gets weirder though..

I installed pavucontrol and I noticed that:
a) My PCH card is not listed in the Configuration tab
b) The sound indicators are moving when I play music but I don't hear anything.

From the above I deduce that for some reason, pulseaudio uses the wrong device and maybe doesn't even see the right one.

Here is the output of some commands to give you a glimpse of my setup.

Re: [SOLVED] Sound stopped working when installed PulseAudio

remove that asoundrc or both rather, then install pulseaudio-alsa, then reboot. If it doesn't work even then post

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs #While listening something

That asoundrc is a cluttered mess, it's a wonder it worked with plain alsa and pretty likely to cause issues with pulse's detection

Okay now it works (I also added my user to audio group).

The problem now is that I hear a weird buzzing noise. I hear that noise right from the start. Before I even login. It starts after the boot loader but before I even get to tty.

Also, I still don't see my card on pavucontrol.

I run the last of your commands twice (while listening something and while not listening)

Re: [SOLVED] Sound stopped working when installed PulseAudio

Apparently when I use alsamixer to mute

Front Mic

it stops. I still got no idea why is that happening though.

Re: [SOLVED] Sound stopped working when installed PulseAudio

You shouldn't have to add your user to the audio group, while not inherently bad, that might sometimes mask problems that should be dealt with differently. The buzzing noise is probably some hardware being incorrectly shielded or similar. If you use pavucontrol to mute the mic instead, does that stick over a reboot? Otherwise you might want to run a

sudo alsactl store

after muting the front mic and see if that is kept up until logon.

I muted it with alsamixer and it sticks over reboots.

I cannot do it with pavucontrol because I still cannot see my PCH device in pavucontrol.

I don't want to mark the topic SOLVED just yet because I don't feel safe right now. It feels like it just happens to work right now. It seems strange to me that I cannot see my PCH device in pavucontrol. What do you think?

Re: [SOLVED] Sound stopped working when installed PulseAudio

You should see a seperate PCH control in some form, maybe it's implemented as a different profile or sink port, to verify that, post the other outputs I requested.

Correspond to your internal analog card, pavucontrol uses this same information to build it's GUI. In the Configuration tab you should see a card "Built-in Audio" and on the output devices tab you should see a sink named: "Built-in Audio Analog Stereo". As you have quite a few audio devices connected, are you sure that your pavucontrol window isn't simply too small or you have to scroll downwards in its UI to find the corresponding card? The only other explanation that I'd have is that your theme is broken and you need to switch to a proper GTK3 Theme since that can cause issues, however this would be immediately noticeable and not only for this one specific sink/card

Re: [SOLVED] Sound stopped working when installed PulseAudio

do you source /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/50-systemd-user.sh in your xinitrc? I think you need that
