Sorry for the first being a question. But this issue has been hitting me all night.
So I've been working all night on getting arch just the way I like. Yet I've run into an issue that hours of google and searching on the forum can't seem to solve. I have i3 tiling manager which starts the XFCE panel then the nm-applet along with some other apps that I use. After struggling forever trying to find out why network manager wouldn't appear in XFCE and found that none of the icons are visible. I can test this by opening the GUI configuration of the panel and viewing the notification area. This allows me to see all the apps that should show up in the notification area.
When i log in via a XFCE session as opposed to i3 the notification area works. However I've tried editing the i3 conf, I've tried reinstalling the applet, installing all of the XFCE packages, adding more XFCE packages to my i3 conf file, ect. but nothing works.
further if I reboot the PC or kill Xorg nm-applet will attempt to load giving me the error "The notification area lost selection". for all my googling I can't figure out what the exact cause is, and the only thing I can find is that it's a "bug" in posts that are years old.
any help will be appreciated. thanks guys.e

So I'm not sure if I should mark this solved as what I found was more of a workaround then a solution.
apparently I3's bar has a tray which pulls focus from XFCE's notification area. For the life of me I couldn't find a way to disable this bar completely. This left me with my wireless applett in I3s bar, and my other settings in XFCE.
What I ended up doing was changing over to Herbstluftwm which seems to play nicer with the XFCE panel.
But seeing as the actual question wasn't solved I'll leave the thread up for now unless told otherwise.
