[SOLVD] Binding an i3-input command causes a temporary terminal freeze

Hi all,

I have a weird issue with the i3 window manager. I have the following line in my config file for i3:

bindsym $mod+y exec i3-input -F 'exec $terminal -e vifm -c "locate %s"' -P 'Locate: '

When I press $mod+y I get a box with "Locate:" written in it and I type the thing to search in there.
Then a terminal opens (I set $terminal to lxterminal) with vifm file manager, where I can browse the results of
the locate command.

The problem is that when lxterminal opens, it is frozen for some amount of time, a few seconds to maybe half a minute, it changes. This is not happening if I just run the command

i3-input -F 'exec lxterminal -e vifm -c "locate %s"' -P 'Locate: '

in a terminal, no freeze at all.

Not sure where to start with this one.. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

PS. I have posted the same question on the i3wm subreddit (it seems that this is the official place to do that) but haven't received any replies.

Enable logging for i3 and post the log file here:

Re: [SOLVD] Binding an i3-input command causes a temporary terminal freeze

a) $terminal  vs. lxterminal
b) the exec call; try to omit it and or rather fork the entire command
c) briefly "sleep 0.2" before calling i3-input

Something I just noticed: If I press Alt+y and search for a string,
then I get the frozen locate vifm screen. But if right after that I
open another lxterminal and close it, then the vifm locate screen
unfreezes immediately.

Done.
Should I try to investigate a bit more before I file a bug report?

None of these worked..

a) Same behaviour
b) When ommiting any of the execs, alt+y does nothing
c) alt+y does nothing again

Re: [SOLVD] Binding an i3-input command causes a temporary terminal freeze

Ok, it must be a bug. I downgraded i3-wm to 4.12-1 and the problem disappeared.
Same problem with other terminals such as xfce4-terminal:

bindsym $mod+y exec i3-input -F 'exec xfce4-terminal -x vifm -c "locate %s"' -P 'Locate: '

I'll open a bug report.

EDIT: Here's my report
https://github.com/i3/i3/issues/2612
I figured that the problem is irrelevant to vifm, lxterminal, etc. Any appication ran this way
is frozen. Then I realized that if I focus somewhere else and refocus on the application, it
unfreezes.

EDIT2: The bug is fixed in the development branch
