Should I use gconf/dconf/gsettings for MATE desktop?

I did some search which shows that gconf is now deprecated, dconf is the new backend and gsettings is the new frontend. But dconf and dconf-editor also work.

MATE is a fork of Gnome 2 not 3 and thus I'm wondering which tool it favors.

Additional research reveals dconf and gsettings don't accept the same key path. Thus I'm wondering what's the exact difference between them and where I can find their schemes.
