[SOLVED]Dual GPU, Triple monitor. No output on both GPU's at the sa...

Dear Arch Forum, today is day 6 of me trying to fix this issue. I've asked all over IRC and searched all over the Arch forums and could not find a solution that worked in my scenario. You are my last hope.

Problem:
1. When booting a fresh arch install I can only see tty and my DesktopManager on my Intel screens. When I switch my initial gpu(from bios) around from Intergrated to PCI (AMD) It's the other way around. No tty on intels but tty and DM on AMD.
Xrandr only lists the monitors attached to the gpu I booted with. Xrandr does list both providers however.
2. Xrandr lists the second(1440x900) intergrated graphics monitor as HDMI2. (instead of DVI)

Setup:
r9 290 on 1x 2560x1440 monitor through DVI.
i7 2600k (Intel Graphics 3000) on 1x 1680x1050 through VGA & 1x 1440x900 through DVI.

Settings during this Xorg.0.log:
drivers:    xf86-video-ati (1:2.99.917+746+g169c74f-1)
                   xf86-video-intel (1:7.8.0-1)

DM:
           Awesome

What I have tried so far:
1. Use XFCE4 instead of Awesome. (No success)
2. Use Ubuntu live CD to compare. (all 3 work out of the box (the tease was real but I managed to resist))
3. Use Mint Live CD. (Same issue)
4. Use Manjaro Live CD. (Same issue) (Even after tweaking alot with their mhwd thingy)
5. Use Early KMS start (as described in thisarticle.) (Same issue)
6. Disabling Modesetting (Same issue)
7. Writing an actual 20-radeon.conf & 30-intel.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/. (same issue, got an tty once but then when X started it went black again.) (Most of the time it just gave me an "error no screens found")
8. remove xf86-video-ati & or intel. (Same issue)
9. Did things with 'xrandr --setprovideroutputsource' (Same issue.)
10. Did things with 'xrandr --setprovideroffloadsink'. (This managed to actually give me X on all 3, but 0 performance (I think because of it being virtual and not actually being ran on the correct gpu)
11. Reinstalled Arch about 9 times. (I was desperate) (Same issue)

I've tried more things than these 12 but I simply can't remember them, I've been putting in well over 20 hours of time trying to fix it.

I hope this is enough information, please tell me if anything else is needed, I will respond as fast as possible.

You asked no question ;-)
But I guess you're after https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/mu … te_screens
You'll be running two independent X11 session (on each GPU) - one mouse and keyboard, but as long as there's no special HW, you won't be able to run one framebuffer on two GPUs, thus windows will exist on one or the other GPU and cannot be moved among them.

Just when you thought you made your topic as extended as possible, you forget the actual question. :)

I went ahead and made an Xorg.conf file that tries to make independent X's on the monitors.
Based on this and this documentation I managed to come up with xorg.conf .

Still no image on my monitor, nor detection with xrandr.

here's the Xorg.0.log

Re: [SOLVED]Dual GPU, Triple monitor. No output on both GPU's at the sa...

The Multihead page seems to target systems with 1 gpu and mulitple monitors.

TTimoNN, your description indicates your system uses a "hybrid graphics" setup .
These systems require a special type of setup.

For an intel/amd hybrid graphics system that uses opensource drivers the PRIME wiki page is the relevant page.

Re: [SOLVED]Dual GPU, Triple monitor. No output on both GPU's at the sa...

He's not running a hybrid setup, but a multigpu/multi-output setup. Basically multiseat conditions.

@TTimoNN
remove Device1 (it's the same as Device0) and instead add a serverlayout section as eg. patterned in this section https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/multihead#Xinerama where you list the configured "Screen"s you want to use on the server which itself are liked to "Device"s.
You can also ditch the Monitor setting and configure that via xrandr.

Notice: that you will need to tell X11 clients which DISPLAY to use, ie. "xrandr -q --display :0.0" will show the one Screen and "xrandr -q --display :0.1" the other

Re: [SOLVED]Dual GPU, Triple monitor. No output on both GPU's at the sa...

Seth, check the first post again.

TTimoNN mentions having 2 videocards : an integrated intel gpu and a discrete amd gpu .

All processors with an integrated processor (younger then approx 5 years) that are combined with a discrete videocard use Hybrid graphics.

If TTimoNN had a processor without an integrated gpu and two discrete gpu-cards , the xinerama setup would probably work.

That is a 100% correct description of the behaviour for a Hybrid graphics setup.

Re: [SOLVED]Dual GPU, Triple monitor. No output on both GPU's at the sa...

He has two display devices, three crtcs (two on one and one on the oder device) and three monitors and wants them all to be colorful. It's not a problem with linking through the frontbuffer.

Otherwise (ie. if the BIOS switch toggles CRTCs and you can have either the IGP XOR the PCI ones active), he'll oc. never have 3 Monitors up, thus his question is void since he doesn't have any trouble with GPU selection (or likely the desire, for "PCI" severely suggests a not-so-mobile system)

Re: [SOLVED]Dual GPU, Triple monitor. No output on both GPU's at the sa...

Seth, the PRIME methodolgy does allow using all attached monitors in a hybrid graphics setup.

TTimoNN, please proceed like this :

remove all xorg *.conf files
start X

post "xrandr -q" , "xrandr --listproviders" and glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer" output .

configure the "PRIME GPU offloading" as described here .

post DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer" output .

The outputs will prove whether or not you have a hybrid graphics setup.

First I want to thank both of you for actively looking into this situation with me.

Not very mobile I think.

Xorg.0.log  as of this boot.

xrandr -q
xrandr --listproviders
glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer"

xrandr --setprovideroffloadsink 1 0 = error

DRI_PRIME=1 glxinfo | grep "OpenGL renderer" = error

In other news.
I am without any configs right now getting tty on my intel gpu when booting with PCI, still no X yet however.     I tried running multiple X as suggested to me, but I didn't manage to get that to work.

After trying "xrandr --setprovideroutputsource 0 1" I managed to see all 3 monitors inside xrandr (--listmonitors).... but still no active X running on them.

the intel card doesn't have Source Offload  capability, so in this configuration gpu offloading is impossible.

With AMD as primary and intel as secondary card you can use Reverse Prime to let the AMD card drive/render all attached monitors.
Intel just gave the integrated card the bare minimum needed to function as a primary card and left out stuff useful for a secondary card.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I do think best setup for you is to set the integrated card as primary in firmware.
That setup should allow you to let the amd card drive graphics heavy programs or pass it through to a vm guest.

First you tell me to use Reverse Prime with AMD as primary and then you tell me to use Intel as primary?

I would have to run an independent X for every gpu-heavy program I start and run it on the AMD?

Is it not possible to simply (permanently) run Two X's one for intel and one for AMD?

i7 2600k has no VT-D (IOMMU) support if that is what you mean.

In other news, I threw in my old GeForce 560 TI in my case together with my r9 290, and I have the exact same problem as I have right now, so I removed it seeing as it will be useless power wasting and might aswell continue trying to get it fixed for the Intel gpu.

This is an Xorg.0.log from the same system running Ubuntu 16.10: http://termbin.com/824q Everything is working fine and is running on a single X, I tried looking through the config files but they are using a completely different method of setting it up, so I'm not sure if it will be of use. I did notice something interesting while testing with Ubuntu: "xrandr --listproviders" came up with 3 providers, 1 HAWAII and 2x modesetting.

edit: I used reverse PRIME to let my AMD render the monitors attached to intel, and the system thinks it is working (all monitors showing up in xrandr and can be configured. However, in reality, they give a signal but are still completely black.

Re: [SOLVED]Dual GPU, Triple monitor. No output on both GPU's at the sa...

First you tell me to use Reverse Prime with AMD as primary and then you tell me to use Intel as primary?

In a hybrid graphics setup the primary and secondary cards need different capabilities .
If amd primary with intel secondary doesn't work as desired, trying intel as primary with amd secondary is the logical option to try next.

I would have to run an independent X for every gpu-heavy program I start and run it on the AMD?

just one X, but you would have to have to run every gpu-heavy program on the AMD.

Is it not possible to simply (permanently) run Two X's one for intel and one for AMD?

with 2 real video cards that would be possible, with a hybrid graphics setup it isn't.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Ubuntu xorg log shows the AMD is primary there, since you state everything works fine there let's stick to AMD as Primary for now.
By comparing ubuntu and arch xorglogs, it becomes clear the installed drivers differ.

run pacman -Qs xf86-video .

To match the ubuntu setup we want to see these in that output :
xf86-video-ati
xf86-video-fbdev
xf86-video-vesa

remove anything not listed above, especially xf86-video-intel .

After that has been done, re-start X without any  *.conf files and post xorg log + xrandr --listproviders .

Re: [SOLVED]Dual GPU, Triple monitor. No output on both GPU's at the sa...

pacman -Qs xf86-video: http://termbin.com/u6r3
Xorg.0.log: http://termbin.com/h3as
xrandr --listproviders: http://termbin.com/jj76

I will be trying some previous suggestions based on this driver config.

edit: both monitors intel monitors black when launched

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource 1 0 will let the monitors be configurable by xrandr.

I can only turn one of the 2 monitors on intel on at a time, so when I turn on the left one the right one goes black.

I decided to just put one of the 2 intel monitors back on my AMD and use provideroutputsource to turn on the last intel monitor.
This all seems to work correctly. Now I will look into doing this all on boot automaticly.
