Ugly fonts - How to fix them [Solved]

Hey there!

I'm on a relatively fresh install of Arch with Deepin Desktop Environment (the question is probably not related to dde). The first problem I've encountered is that I was unable to change the desktop's default font via the control panel, it was stuck on "Noto Sans". However after manually changing the theme template this problem resolved itself. Some of the fonts I see remained ugly though especially in firefox. Here is how my facebook notifications look like:

This is definitely not the default Helvetica font. I checked the computed font-family of the element in Firefox, and it says it is using Helvetica. I've checked the fonts using Chromium too, it renders them very differently, but even uglier. What can I do to fix this issue?

https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/ttf-ms-fonts/ Is really popular, not sure if it makes things prettier though or just makes everything look like on windows

I've got both ms-fonts and mac-fonts installed, it still looks like that for most of the sites.

Uhm, just checked firefox and I had the same problem. After a little digging I found this https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/fo … me_systems

Now it looks much better

Edit: I also disabled websites from choosing their own fonts in firefox's font settings

Unfortunately, it was not the problem either, removing did not improve the font rendering style.

In firefox rightlclick an element rendered in a font you dislike select the "Inspect Element" option,  select the Fonts panel should be bottom right and the font listed should be what firefox is using for that element.

Re: Ugly fonts - How to fix them [Solved]

Facebook in Firefox will use TexGyreHeros as a replacement for Helvetica. If neither Helvetica, nor Arial, nor a Helvetica replacement like Heros is installed, it will pick some available sans-serif font.

So I would try to install tex-gyre-fonts and restart Firefox.

Chrome/Chromium OTOH does not know that Heros=Helvetica and picks Arial on my system.

Thanks a lot! It worked!

Don't forget to edit the thread title and mark it as solved!

I think Facebook should really get with the times and use web fonts like every other major web site out there does. That would solve this problem. Relying on fonts installed on a user's machine is so 1990s... smile
