[SOLVED] Google maps unusable in chromium

For some time (unsure... months?) I've had real troubles using google maps in chromium. My current version:

$ pacman -Qi chromium
Name : chromium
Version : 55.0.2883.87-1

Here's an example screenshot of what happens when I search around, try to move/zoom, or really do anything. This was me opening maps.google.com, then typing "something" into the search bar and trying to collapse the resultant left side panel.

I'm not sure if it's helpful, but here's my chrome://gpu content:

Any suggestions of where to check? Offhand I can't think of anything else that's behaving badly. This Ubuntu post was probably the closest I could find with respect to the problem and most of the suggestions seemed to be disabling some sort of acceleration/graphics aspect of chromium. I tried some but without success, including wiping ~/.cache/chromium.

Lastly, here's my graphics setup:

- 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK106GLM [Quadro K2100M] (rev ff)

Re: [SOLVED] Google maps unusable in chromium

To me that looks like it might be a driver problem. Which xf86-video-* driver are you using? If you are using (or have installed) xf86-video-intel then uninstall it, make sure you don't have any xorg configuration files telling xorg to make use of that driver and try to start X again (or reboot, or restart your DE).

If you don't have xf86-video-intel you could try installing it and see if things work better, but from what I've seen, using the intel driver causes more problems that it solves.

Re: [SOLVED] Google maps unusable in chromium

@R00KIE: I don't recall the thread or time frame, but there were a whole mess of problems a while back with intel/i915 and one of the suggestions was to remove xf86-video-intel, which I did. So nothing there. I wondered if it was missing hardware acceleration which is why I have all that libva/vdpau/vaapi stuff installed. I can try removing them?

In any case, I agree that I had a bunch of issues some time back with it and removing fixed so I'd prefer to just leave that be.

EDIT: looks like it was this thread where I mention removing xf86-video-intel fixed a problem with lag for me. I've run across others, such as on reddit as well.

Re: [SOLVED] Google maps unusable in chromium

If you don't have xf86-video-intel installed then you are using the modesetting driver and that leaves me without any ideas except trying xf86-video-intel, although I would expect the old problems to come back. My laptop also has an intel igpu and I'm also using the modesetting driver and I don't see any problems, there are no other people complaining here so it's most probably something specific to your setup. Have you tried creating a new user and checking if chrome behaves the same way in the freshly created user account?

Regarding libva/vdpau/vaapi, that shouldn't matter for your problem, chrome/chromium on linux does not make use of hardware video decoding acceleration. Just a small note, if you are using only the intel card you don't want anything vdpau related to be installed unless you really need it.

Re: [SOLVED] Google maps unusable in chromium

Most (not necessarily all) of the problems with xf86-video-intel can be solved without having to remove the driver and fully switch to modesetting.  I've ditched the intel driver on all of my machines that have intel video cards and the modesetting driver works great for me.  But it if isn't working for you, reinstall xf86-video-intel and test out some of the other workarounds (e.g., try uxa or glamour acceleration, use the i915 enable_fbc=0 kernel parameter).

You can see ample reports just in the threads you linked to where removing the intel driver resulted in other graphical problems for some users (specific examples are there with firefox and libreoffice, now we'll just add chromium/google-maps to that list).

EDIT: I missed that this is a hybrid system so take my previous comments with a large grain of salt: I have no experience with hybrid graphics.

Re: [SOLVED] Google maps unusable in chromium

do you have an xorg.conf, or anything in xorg.conf.d? The system should not be using llvmpipe.

Re: [SOLVED] Google maps unusable in chromium

@R00KIE: I'm actually not sure what gets used for what. In my BIOS I have both (switchable) enabled but really don't care that much and don't use much in the way of graphics heavy applications. When I *do* want it (say for gimp work or processing raw digital photos), I'd rather not have to re-enable in BIOS so I went the bumblebee/bbswitch route.

@Trilby: interesting. I hadn't noted anything up to this point, but can try what you suggested. Using glamour rings a bell as a possible fix, and my memory was that removing it altogether just seemed simpler at the time? I'll try and post back.

@ugjka: is that through kernel modesetting driver or an option for xf86-video-intel?

@Scimmia: just checked and I *do* have a /etc/X11/20-intel.conf, though I'm assuming it's doing nothing at the moment since I don't have it installed. I don't know what I was doing at the time I created it, though it appears I was probably fiddling with sna vs. uxa?

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "modesetting"
# Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
   Option "Backlight" "intel_backlight"
EndSection

Thanks for the suggestions. I just needed maps and thought to try firefox, which works. Not sure if that reduces the possible problems at all (as in, what graphics is firefox using that chromium isn't)? I'll post back later today when I can try out the intel driver again. Any ideas on the battery impact of going full on nvidia? That's another option... I could just ditch intel altogether. Also, how do I tell what's being currently used? I see this in dmesg:

$ dmesg |grep -i vga

[ 52.688993] bbswitch: Found discrete VGA device 0000:01:00.0: \_SB_.PCI0.PEGP.DGFX

Given my lspci output,

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK106GLM [Quadro K2100M] (rev ff)

I'm guessing that the intel graphics are used at boot and NVIDIA would only be used if I started something with optirun? If that's the case, I really don't ever use that and could just ditch intel or NVIDIA altogether if that's simpler and less prone to issues? I just have bumblebee since I have switchable graphics and thought there might be a performance boost/saw it in the wiki!

Can you post your xorg log? Something is definitely not right with your graphic driver setup.

Re: [SOLVED] Google maps unusable in chromium

@scimmia: sure. Here's the current log; after what's pasted, it's just further messages from suspend/resume cycles:

Edit: wait, that's completely wrong/old! I need to see where Xorg logs should be as /var/log/Xorg.0.log was from a super old kernel and not possibly current. I'll do some digging and post back.

Edit2: ah, it's in ~/.local/share/xorg now!

Issue is gone! Any reason not to continue on with xf86-video-intel and uxa? Will some other aspect of the system suffer, for example? I can read around though admit that this graphics stuff really tires me out. Things seem quite in flux and I don't understand why linux is in the state it's in. I'd much prefer there to be one definitive answer with evidence/data on why something is preferred and I'd go ahead and make the switch. Instead, the times I've had issues I end up spending hours in forums reading exact opposite reports of the effect of some option, people spouting kernel options to try with no real evidence, etc. I find that frustrating and generally a waste of time. For now this appears to be working so I guess I'll just leave it alone.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Re: [SOLVED] Google maps unusable in chromium

The issue with the modesetting driver (ergo no xf86-video-intel) was that you had accelmethod sna still there, and as a result the modesetting driver (which doesn't use sna) disabled its own accelmethod glamor. So this might still be something to try if you run into any issues. The problem with the current fluxing around of things and the intel driver is that there is not one definite answer currently and it depends on what you expect from it, they all have some edge cases that  work correctly in one version of the driver but not the other. (off the top of my head, any combination of xf86-video-intel breaks certain KDE effects, they work fine with modesetting, on the other hand the modesetting driver might have some tearing problems with non composited WMs because it doesn't implement a 2D acceleration driver)

The only thing that's somewhat certain is that xf86-video-intel's development has pretty much stalled and it seems that future focus will be more and more on the modesetting driver. There's only one developer on xf86-video-intel and mostly necessary API compat and few one liner bugfixes have been the commit history, while the modesetting driver is actively developed

Re: [SOLVED] Google maps unusable in chromium

@V1del: hmmm. I'll try that. I noticed some stuff was uncommented, but figured without intel installed it shouldn't matter. I'll move the whole file to *.bak and try again with google maps. Thanks for the background info as well. I perused nouveau's Prime page which mentioned some of the issues with tailoring the solutions to each different laptop, so that makes sense re. all of the conflicting reports.

Re: [SOLVED] Google maps unusable in chromium

Wow. Feeling quite foolish. So after commenting out all of 20-intel.conf and removing xf86-video-intel, maps is working just fine in chromium. So all of this appears due to my stupidity in the modesetting driver picking up an option in 20-intel.conf!?

Thanks all for the assistance/patience.
