Can't use discrete AMD graphics card R7 M265.

Hello. This is my first post on the Arch Linux forums so please be nice and point out my mistakes, so I can improve.
I can't use my discrete AMD R7 M265 graphics card on my laptop.
I have tried nearly everything, twise, I've found on wiki pages from the Arch Linux wiki and from other sites as well.
I'm willing to try everything again just to be sure.

So let's start from the start.
Before one year or so, I installed Ubuntu 16.04 on my machine. From the start I could not manage to use the discrete graphic card of my laptop while using the AMDGPU driver. So I tried to google the problem and I found that the AMDGPU has a bug with the R7 AMD graphic cards because it was still in the BETA and that I should use the fglrx driver. Therefore I installed Ubuntu 14.04 on my laptop and I switched to the fglrx driver. Using the fglrx driver was clearly an improvement, but sometimes when booting I would get the !!! Unknown header type 7f error when running the lspci -v command at my terminal. Other times when shutting down I would get an error saying something about ring (-1) and then generate a kernel panic and some other times the AMDGPU driver was loader on it's own, even though I chose fglrx from the additional software. It was so confusing. At this point I had some scruples about if it was a hardware problem, so contacted DELL to help me determine if it was a hardware problem. Because I had only Linux installed on my laptop the only thing they could do was to point out to me the diagnostics option when booting the laptop. I ran the diagnostics and it said that there is no hardware errors. At this point I was at a dead end. I did not know enough about how to manage my drivers and how I can edit successfully my xorg.conf file or how to choose one driver over the other. So I installed Arch Linux, hoping that the "do everything yourself" consept will help me to learn how to do it myself. Long story short, even now, having tried everything from the Arch wiki I still can't use my AMD gpu.
Let me help you, so you can help me:

Re: Can't use discrete AMD graphics card R7 M265.

Remove/rename all custom xorg configuration files, remove that amdgpu blacklist, reboot and post output of 'lspci -nnvk'.

  • I renamed all the custom xorg configuration files from /etc/X11/.

  • I renamed the .xinitrc custom file from my home directory (~/.xinitrc)

  • I also renamed all custom files from /etc/modules-load.d/.

  • I commented out the blacklist amdgpu line from the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklisted_modules.conf.

The output of lspci -nnvk is:

NOTE: This output would happen sometimes before I renamed the custom xorg files as well. In fact it happened just before I renamed the files I listed above.
NOTE: There is not any improvement in performance.

Re: Can't use discrete AMD graphics card R7 M265.

I was suspecting that you might have an older card that might also be supported by the radeon module, but the vendor:product id combo says otherwise.

Let me try to answer things point by point:

X doesn't start: your "main" card will be the Intel iGPU, that is most probably where all the outputs are connected. If you don't have any custom xorg conf files that will be what xorg will use by default, and that is most probably the only way it will work.

Performance issues: if you want to use the AMD dGPU for gaming you'll have to look into using dri prime[1] if you are using the open source stack, if you are using the proprietary driver I can't help there. As far as I know there is not automatic switching on linux, you have to manually specify which card to use.

Discrete gpu doesn't work: if open driver driver support is still preliminary then there isn't much you can do but wait until things mature, or find a way to use the proprietary driver until things work.

Re: Can't use discrete AMD graphics card R7 M265.

The PRIME method will only work for X sessions, not for wayland sessions.

Setting up multi-gpu/multi-monitor/hybrid graphics  on wayland depends on the compositor used.
AL wiki has an example for the weston compositor, but afaik gnome has incorporated wayland support in their own custom mutter compositor.
I am not aware of any information that describes how to configure hybrid graphics /multi-gpu /multi-screen setups with gnome-wayland & mutter.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

Intel/AMD PRIME does work on GNOME/Wayland - at least with a single-head setup. I can confirm that much. No personal experience with multi-head setups here, nor the hardware to try.
