[SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

Hi, I am running Arch with gdm and gnome and I feel like trying out other desktop environments.
For some reason, gdm does not start the DE that I've chosen and kick me back to the login screen while only Gnome can run perfectly. Therefore, I thought that something is wrong with gdm and decided to try another dm to do it.
Installed lxdm, ran the following commands

systemctl disable gdm
systemctl enable lxdm

and lxdm would not even start.

The log file for lxdm is as follows:

** Message: find greeter (nil)

** Message: find idle (nil)

** Message: 1483072494: add xserver watch

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

systemctl disable gdm
systemctl enable lxdm

These commands would not stop gdm and would not start lxdm.

[     6.709] (==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"

Please post this /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

Please delete / disable that /etc/X11/xorg.conf restart lxdm and post an updated Xorg.0.log if an error remains.
Edit:
Also what is the output of

$ lspci | grep -E 'VGA|3D'

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

Starting lxdm with

systemctl start lxdm

Would switch to tty1 with a flashing cursor, therefore I started it with

 xinit lxdm

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

I suggest you modify the title to include bumblebee as the Xorg.0.log shows show unusual behavior that may be standard for bumblebee.
In the log autodetection fails to find the nvdidia GPU and also fails to find the modesetting driver that is included with the X server.
Hopefully someone with experience of bumblebee will be able to help more.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

Since it fails to load the intel driver and then gives up, bumblebee might not work with the modesetting driver.
=> install xf86-video-intel

Is this output normal? Does this mean that I have to remove gdm, lxdm, nvidia-utils first then install xf86-video-intel and those 3 again?
Im using xorg-server 1.19 as it is a fix for pointer locking in certain games.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

If you got xorg-server from testing, you need to fetch xf86-video-intel from testing as well.
Also ensure you're not attempting a partial update where the installed server is simply older than the to-be-installed driver.

And no, do not uninstall stuff, the conflict would remain.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

[ 190.311] Current Operating System: Linux waifu 4.8.14-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Dec 11 01:47:53 UTC 2016 x86_64

Not the testing kernel and would also need the nvidia packages to match the testing kernel.
Would either enable the testing repository plus its multilib counterpart if you use multilib then do a full system upgrade ( extra y option as you are changing databases )

$ pacyman -Syyu

Or do a full a system upgrade without the testing repositories enabled and without any of the packages from testing on hold to revert the partial upgrade you have done.
Edit:
grammar missing repository

If you got xorg-server from testing, you need to fetch xf86-video-intel from testing as well.
Also ensure you're not attempting a partial update where the installed server is simply older than the to-be-installed driver.

And no, do not uninstall stuff, the conflict would remain.

Thanks for reminding me about testing. For some reason, testing was commented...
After enabling testing and installing xf86-video-intel, this is the log from lxdm.

See loqs' comment - which repo exactly do you have 4.8.14-1 from? core is 8.13 and testing is 9.

I think the reason of it being left at 4.8.14-1 is because of this.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

When you enabled the testing repository you appear have left the community-testing repository disabled
Edit:
it appears the linux, util-linux, libutil-linux packages and possibly others did not come from the testing repositories but from the staging repository.
Edit2:
So the xorg packages were from staging as well

Yes.

OOC, what's that staging repo doing there? I thought it doesn't exist but util-linux actually has an entry there???

Well, I'm afraid that I could not answer, since I forgot why is it there too.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

The repo *was* for internal reasons and not meant to be used by users, but I thought it's gone entirely.
Either way, staging must be above testing, but I suggest to remove it and accept the warnings (about local packages being ahead of testing ones)

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

Disabling_testing_repositories
Following those steps including enabling downgrades should reset all packages to none testing/ none staging versions.
Alternatively you could enable all the testing repositories as I mentioned previously you missed community-testing on the previous attempt then run step perform a full upgrade with downgrades enabled to remove the packages from staging.
Would recommend you try the none testing version first.

Tried both of them, still the same outcome.
Looking at my Xorg.0.log, the first error

[ 55.661] (EE)
Fatal server error:
[ 55.661] (EE) parse_vt_settings: Cannot open /dev/tty0 (Permission denied)

Would that be the culprit of this problem?

If you use startx instead of a display manager does that error still occur?

It seems so. I'll try to look for solutions from other posts and see if any of them would help.

Re: [SOLVED] Cannot change wm and de, running on bumblebee.

Fixed the problem.

10-monitor.conf

Section "Monitor"
	Identifier	"Monitor0"
EndSection

Section "Device"
	Identifier	"Device0"
	Driver	"intel"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
	Identifier "Screen0"
	Device	"Device0"
	Monitor	"Monitor0"
	DefaultDepth	16
	SubSection "Display"
		Depth	16
		Modes	"1920x1080"
	EndSubSection
EndSection

Replaced vesa with intel, now X works with no problem. Thanks all.
