[SOLVED] Laptop reboots on suspend - only on battery!

tl;dr: my laptop boots from zero when waking from suspend, but only if on battery.
EDIT: the same problem is present in Windows and I suspect started when I bumped the RAM to 32GB. So it's a Dell BIOS / hardware issue, it seems...

I have a Dell XPS15 9550 (see signature).
Since a few days ago it started behaving strangely with suspend: if I suspend the laptop when on AC, all is fine.
If I unplug it from the wall, then try to suspend (with any method), it successfully suspends, but when trying to wake it up it just reboots, as if it was turned off. If the lid is closed, opening it is sufficient to make it boot from zero.

This happens no matter if I try to suspend with `systemctl suspend`, or via Plasma, or by closing the lid (which is also handled by Plasma).
Here is my logind.conf (only showing non-defaults settings):

[Login]
HandleLidSwitch=ignore
LidSwitchIgnoreInhibited=no
RuntimeDirectorySize=20%

This is an example systemd journal tail for a on-battery suspend, which seems to go well:

Which seems pretty normal to me.

The only things that have changed from last time I know it was working are:
- BIOS updated: this may be a cause but I've seen nobody with a similar issue
- EDIT: wait, I think it MAY have started when I bumped the RAM to 32GB. That's another thing that may have changed...

AFAIK nothing that should impact suspend was updated.

I have no modules in mkinitcpio.conf
Hooks are:

HOOKS="systemd autodetect modconf block filesystems fsck"

What could be the cause of this issue?

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop reboots on suspend - only on battery!

You can try disabling pm_async as a first step

sudo bash -c "echo 0 > /sys/power/pm_async"

This solved my hibernation issues

No change, but... I just tried in Windows, and IT DOES THE SAME!

So it seems that with my upgraded 32GB or RAM the laptop cannot suspend while on battery. This looks definitely like a bug on Dell's side...

Re: [SOLVED] Laptop reboots on suspend - only on battery!

Sounds like it's affected by the same Skylake bug:

- See if there is a BIOS update available
- Try a BIOS Downgrade

If those don't work, the method that works for me is to take the battery out of the laptop and put it back in and the suspend will work fine unless I do a hard reset by holding the power button.

However, it happens on Windows too for me, so it might be something different. Yesterday I did a BIOS reset and I tested twice today and it seems to be working... I will continue testing

Yes it's definitely a hardware issue that seems to have different triggers and quirks depending on the brand and model - the common denominator being skylake. Same issue for me, once a hard reset has been done, both Windows and Linux reset when waking from suspend on battery.

Thank you, that would explain it. I now know to just mess with BIOS resets and hard resets if it starts again, until it is fixed...
