Lenovo Thinkpad P50 external monitor on discrete graphics problem

Hi all,

I have a problem with a multi monitor setup on my Lenovo Thinkpad P50. I want to use the internal display and an additional external Monitor connected via DVI or HDMI on the docking station. Xrandr doesn't list the discrete nvidia graphics card as 'nouveau' and only detects the internal display although the nvidia card, the intel card and even the connected monitor are detected on kernel level. This problem occurs even when I change the kind of connection => DP directly or HDMI directly or Docking DVI or Docking HDMI

Disclaimer:  This post is not a duplicate of [SOLVED] External monitors not detected on Thinkpad P50 because I use nouveau and not nvidia driver. I already know the wikis about Nouveau, PRIME, NVIDIA_Optimus, Bumblebee and Xrandr, but these infos didn't help, as the problem seems to be somewhere below xrandr and the wikis assume that xrandr detects all outputs correctly.

Here are some information about my system:

Re: Lenovo Thinkpad P50 external monitor on discrete graphics problem

The trick was to make the connectors of the discrete card visible to the internal card. I wrote a little script that checks for a connected external monitor when X starts and makes the required settings if there is one:

#!/bin/bash

#make the outputs of provider 0 visible to 1
xrandr --setprovideroutputsource 1 0

#get the name of the first connected not internal monitor output dynamically.
#long form (when xrandr doen's detect all connected monitors): DPCON=`tail /sys/class/drm/*/status |egrep -B1 "^connected" |cut -d '/' -f5 |sed 's/card//'|awk -F- '{ print $2"-"$1"-"$3 }' |grep "^DP" |head -n1`
#shorter and more stable, because independent of xrandr display naming (e.g. from "DP-1" card independent to "DP-1-1" to state that the connection is at card1 in later versions of xrandr)
DPCON=`xrandr -q |egrep "^DP" |egrep " connected" |cut -d ' ' -f1 |head -n1`

#only do something if any external monitor is connected
if [ -n ${DPCON} ] ; then
  #set desired position of the external monitor for the extended desktop
  xrandr --output eDP1 --auto --right-of ${DPCON}
fi

This can be started with or copied to ~/.xinitrc and will dynamically do all required settings on startup of X. To start the script automatically when the Thinkpad is connected to the dock, I will probably do a dirty hack by creating a udev rule for the USB device "Lenovo"

Nevertheless there is a new problem: When I move the mouse cursor on the external screen, it's further position is not fully removed, so that I have a curve of mouse arrows on the screen. The refresh rate of the screen seems to be 1fps on mouse actions but normally on keyboard actions.  This is probably caused by the bad performance of the internal graphics card. Due to the fact, that the NV117 is reported as

[    52.328] (EE) Unknown chipset: NV117

the problem couldn't be solved by PRIME GPU offloading

If anyone of you knows a solution, please let me know.
