Run 'groups', on my system the output is "tty video audio optical floppy storage scanner camera users dialout". optical and storage are relevant for your problem.

Okay, now it's work with mplayer and xine
BUT I still have the same problem with Totem...
What can I do?
Thanks for your short respond ;-)

You probably need gstreamer0.10-dvdread.

I already have it install...
but I just noticed that there are two versions of totem, I have this one: totem 1.4.0-1
Offline
maybe I need to install the totem-xine
Don't you think?

I'm using totem-xine for quite a while (also to play dvd's) with much joy.

I have encountered this very same problem, under the same circumstances as the poster. Surely there is someone here who has a solution to it.

These mediaplayers want direct access to /dev/dvd or /dev/cd. These are symlinks to the real device, which have permissions set to r/w for owner and group, others are excluded.
To get access to /dev/dvd as regular user, you have to add yourself to the "optical" group. This can be done with "gpasswd -a user optical".

This is where it gets weird. I just added myself to the audio, video, & optical groups. However, I'm having no luck thus far.
Do I need to reboot or something?

You need to logout and log yourself back in.

Now it's complaining that I don't have the capability to play them back. I thought I had all the right libraries, but now I'm not sure. I've got libdvdread, libdvdcss, libdvdnav, & gstreamer0.10-dvd. I tried running it with the xine engine, and it worked just fine, so now I'm puzzled. Would it have any effect that both Gstreamer 0.10 and 0.08 are on my comp?

totem needs codecs to play files. By default only the basic required ones are installed. If you don't mind to have useless codecs on your system, just install them all with pacman -S gstreamer0.10-plugins.
