Cinnamon & Gnome repeatable frozen i915

Hi,

Related issue: Screen freeze as soon as the window manager starts up https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=213844
I have been noticing a recurring issues that become unbearable, with the recent kernel update 4.8, the issue is somewhere related between, Cinnamon, Gnome, X11 and the i915 driver. with lower versions of the Kernal, 4.4

At login randomly, cinnamon would say it's started in fall-back mode, and a dialog box would appear to restart cinnamon, which then would load cinnamon correctly. all the usual commands don't respond, Ctrl_alt_del, Alt+F2, etc.. the system is completely froze, as if it's hung, but the computer responds to pings, SSH etc. and I can still access it from another machine,

Laptop: Lenovo X250
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-5600U CPU @ 2.60GHz
HD Graphics 5500

I managed to get the logs by SSH from another computer

Re: Cinnamon & Gnome repeatable frozen i915

Have you tried using the xf86-video-modesetting driver instead of xf86-video-intel? Just remove the xf86-video-intel package and restart.

Re: Cinnamon & Gnome repeatable frozen i915

Yes, I swapped out for xf86-video-modesetting
and with this configuration

➜ ~ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
       Section "Module"
               Load "modesetting"
       EndSection

I also followed many of the suggestions here as it looks like it's part of a bigger issue
https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … ideointel/

Version:

extra/xf86-video-intel 1:2.99.917+746+g169c74f-1 (xorg-drivers xorg) [installed]
    X.org Intel i810/i830/i915/945G/G965+ video drivers

i'm able to catch multiple segfault issues now

[Sun Jan 8 11:12:02 2017] cinnamon[1859]: segfault at 1 ip 00007fddbacfd83d sp 00007ffefd4adec8 error 4 in libgobject-2.0.so.0.5000.2[7fddbacc9000+51000]

and again

[ 1337.384301] cinnamon-sessio[3152]: segfault at 8 ip 0000000000400aa0 sp 00007fff6c5e6800 error 4 in cinnamon-session-quit[400000+2000]
[ 1345.744826] cinnamon-sessio[3172]: segfault at 8 ip 0000000000400aa0 sp 00007fffade00eb0 error 4 in cinnamon-session-quit[400000+2000]

still same issues recurring,
what I know now is I can always re-create the issue if I open gnome-disks both in Gnome with Xorg and cinnamon

Re: Cinnamon & Gnome repeatable frozen i915

Also to note:  xf86-video-modesetting is removed as it's now integrated in the xorg-server package, this makes it abit difficult to explicitly load that driver
https://www.archlinux.org/packages/extr … rg-server/

is their a way to increase debugging? in both Xorg, journalctl and dmesg?

Also, how can one restart i915 driver like you would as a service so I don't have to restart the laptop?

The current 'recommendation' is to remove xf86-video-intel (if installed), certainly remove xf86-video-modesetting, any .conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, then a reboot. Also, have you checked to ensure intel ucode is properly installed?

I also find slightly better results with the 4.4 lts, rather than current 4.8 kernel.

Re: Cinnamon & Gnome repeatable frozen i915

Thanks, i've been trying to first solve the issue with the intel driver as it use to work quite stable,
I now have switch to the LTS kernal 4.4.40-1 ,

boot options

➜ ~ cat /proc/cmdline
initrd=\initramfs-linux-lts.img root=/dev/sda2 rw i915.enable_execlists=0

dropped fbc=0

➜ ~ cat /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf
options i915 enable_ips=0 enable_rc6=0 enable_fbc=0 enable_execlists=0

changed to DRI 2 and sna

➜ ~ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
Section "Device"
     Identifier "Intel Graphics"
     Driver "intel"
Option "DRI" "2" # DRI3 is now default
     Option "AccelMethod" "sna" # default
     #Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" # fallback
EndSection

but the laptop still runs very hot! however stable so far, I can't make the display freeze
