I have a local mail archive of type "KMail Mail Folder", which used to work well.
With the latest KMail 5.4.0 (16.12.0-1), a dialog box reports this resource as "broken" and I'm unable to display any mail contents in its subfolders. At the same time, 'akonadiserver' is crashing.
I mostly used my IMAP folders (which still work) the last days, so I can't tell exactly when this issue arose. But I updated to KDE Applications 16.12 on December 15th, so I strongly suspect a correlation.
This also happens to a fresh testuser with a virgin Plasma/KMail/Akonadi setup. It's also not related to the content of the mail folder as other users (with much less mails in the archive) are also affected.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I also welcome pointers to alternative mail clients which are able to directly work with KMail Mail Folders.

Kmail Mail folders is just a maildir folder, so any mail client supporting maildir should work. About the crashes: as usual, nothig can be done unless you post a backtrace.

Similar Problem for me!
Display of a maildir folder as "KMail Mail Folder" or normal "maildir" does not work.
Problems started sometime before X-Mas, that the sender and title of the mails were shown, but not the content of the mail.
After cleaning up Akonadi (deleting all Akonadi related files especially in .local/share and .config) it does not even show the headers of the mails. Strangely the folders of my maildir are shown and even the tooltip in kmail displays the number of mails and the size of the directories.
When closing kmail akonady crashes ( Application: akonadiserver (akonadiserver), signal: Segmentation fault).
Alternative mail clients are no real option for me, since I am unsing kmail for more than 8 years now and up to now I was always happy.

Same to me.
The main problem to me is not the crashing on closing KMail. But it regularly is blocked from showing my mails. I re-start the akonadi server then and afterwards everything is working again. Until it get's stuck again - maybe some minutes or some days later ;-(.
I do not notice any crash in that situation (except from the a.m. one in case re-starting KMail additionally).
I would support anyone having a look into this. Just tell me what to do and I will provide the outputs ;-)

I remember having had this problem in the "old" KDE 4.x days, where i had to restart akonadi everytime i resumed back from standby.
now it started to happen again, however i remember having had it working before just fine, might be because of the latest update.

It was really annoying yesterday, happened after every deletion of a mail. This lead me to the idea of re-indexing the trash. Since then it is running without any problem up to now. I won't tell now it is fixed at all for me as this happened very sporadic before chrismas. It just fixed the problem (reproducible) after each deletion yesterday.

Seems like Kmail is using a special flavour of the Maildir folder layout, so you can't simply point e.g. Evolution to your existing local Kmail mail archive (it will display neither mails nor subfolders).
But with the help of http://korrekt.org/page/Migrating_Email … ail_to_Mac and the original script at http://www.cobb.uk.net/imap-export I was able to create a standard Maildir folder structure in parallel Evolution understands. The script only creates symlinks, nothing is physically copied.
I also do not want to move away from Kmail - simply needed a temporary alternate way to access my mail archive.

@arojas:
I built the akonadi package with -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Debug, but the KDE crash handler still rates the crash log as "useless". However, here it is: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/489 … 170104.log. Any advice how to improve it?

You also need to add options=('debug' '!strip') to the PKGBUILD, otherwise debug symbols will be srtipped

which akonadi backend are you using?

Default MySQL.

Same for me, MySQL.

@jstammi: No problems here deleting incoming mails. Maybe because I configured every IMAP account to use the particular IMAP trash folder, not the local one (which may be the default, can't remember).

I have a filter running that is moving all mails from imap inbox to the local one. I read, delete, etc from the local one only. All folders affected are local ones, no imap is affected.
I have no idea what is going on here, the Trash is just a guess - may be a bad one as nothing of what I've done 2 days ago helped this morning. Now since 3 hours everything seems fine again. But I'm quite sure it will not stay like this ...

This morning kmail si stuck again. And the konsole having re-started the akonadi the last time shows me repeated messages:
Error in my_thread_global_end(): 25 threads didn't exit
Perhaps this gives some indication of some blocking/locking ... ?

This morning I face the situation again that no mail content is shown anymore after having deleted one mail. The mail view shows "Ordner-Inhalt wird bezogen", "Bitte warten ...".
So IMHO it would be helpful to do something (thread/heap dump?) to understand what is blocked. In KMail or/and akonadi. Or am I wrong with this? If not I would appreciate if someone could explain me how to do this ... ?

A new observation using the Akonadi Console: there appears an error in the Debugger tab when running into the last described situation (mail content no longer shown after having deleted an email):

In Job Tracker Tab I find this some entries telling of Failed jobs:

I do not find anything noteworthy in Resource Schedulers and Monitors tabs.
Maybe someone get's an idea where to look at from this?

I think you'll have more chances to get help if you take this upstream. Maybe wait for 16.12.1 release tomorrow and check if it improves things, there have been quite a few fixes in akonadi-land.

Unfortunately not solved with KMail 5.4.1 / KDE Applications 16.12.1.
However, I saw akonadiserver crashing only once after updating KDE Applications. Currently the maildir ressource only is marked as broken and shown in red. In this respect, the situation has improved a little, as access to IMAP folders now stays possible after an unsuccessful read attempt without restarting KMail/Akonadi.
I have updated https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=320529 and https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=294215 accordingly.

KMail 5.4.1 also did not solve the Problem for me. What a pitty, I really was hoping for it.
Thanks HarveyK for updating the Bug-Report.

Same for me: after EACH deletion of a mail I have to re-start the local folders agent ... it is completely unusable this way :-(.

i had the same problem with emails loading and akonadi or something crashing when deleting emails.
But i was able to solve the issue by completely deleting all akonadi setting files (~/.config/akonadi* and ~/.local/share/akonadi* ). When akonadi is restartet (akonadictl restart) all the default options and folders are created and everything works fine again.

Doing so I lost all my mail accounts (and had to go back to yesterday's backup).
For me, akonadi is getting worse with every update - since 16.12.1-3 (together with qt 5.8.0-2?) I now even have problems and crashes accessing my IMAP resources.
Will migrate to Evolution now and check back in a couple of versions.
