I've been using Nautilus (with the Super Flat Remix icon theme) on my Arch system for more than a year, and this issue suddenly appeared after my most recent update. Nautilus reverted the the default (Adwaita) icon theme -- and although lxappearance shows the Super Flat Remix theme as the selected theme, the icons in the preview window are invisible, or look like the default folder icon. This is also the case for any other theme selected, aside from Adwaita and Faba.
I've tried updating the icon cache, as well as uninstalling/reinstalling lxappearance and the theme, and nothing changes. Any idea what might be going on?

Are you/were you using a 3rd party freetype2 package? Infinality, maybe?
Offline
Yeah, actually, I do use Infinality. What's the connection there?

Old freetype2 package breaks harfbuzz
gdk-pixbuf2 updates it's plugin cache on update, which fails because of harfbuzz
gdk-pixbuf2 can now only use it's static loaders (AFAIK, png only).

That also explains why my plugin cache updates have been failing. Is there a workaround?

Search. This has been covered ad nauseam.

I've already purged all infinality-related packages and config lines from my system, according the the instructions in the tutorials, but the issue persists. Sorry if I'm being dense, but I'm not clear on what else I need to do. Do I need to remove harfbuzz entirely?

No, you need to update the mentioned plugin cache.

That fixed it. In case someone else stumbles on this thread looking for a solution, I followed the instructions in this tutorial, then updated the plugin cache, and the issue is now fixed (aside from the fact that apparently no one can get freetype2 font rendering to look exactly the same as infinality's rendering, even with the same settings).
In any case, this is solved.
