Anybody know where to start with this compositor-type issue

Hey,

I run a simple openbox desktop environment with Tilda for my terminal.
I also run xcompmgr.
Quite often, when I activate tilda, it drops down fine but when I de-activate it, I get this strange tearing on the screen. It goes away after I activate and deactivate tilda again a few times to refresh the screen.
I've not noticed it in any other application, so this could be a tilda problem. Just looking for some pointers from people who might have an inkling about what's going on.

Does it happen with Compton as well?

Thanks. I replaced xcompmgr with compton and the problem goes away
