15 Macbook Pro (11,5) freezing periodically

I'm having an issue that is driving me bananas where my laptop is freezing 3-5 times a day. When it freezes the screen is still visible but no input is accepted.  My laptop is a 15" Macbook pro mid 2015 using the Radeon 370x with the radeon driver.

This issue started a couple of weeks ago and I've tried downgrading the kernel I was using from 4.8 back to linux 4.7.6 with no change. I also tried downgrading linux-firmware but that didn't make any difference either.

I've enabled the Magic SysReq keys and tested them when the laptop is running normally to make sure they work, however when the laptop freezes they do nothing and I have to do a hard reboot to get the laptop working again.

There is nothing in journalctl for the last boot in terms of obvious error messages when I restart the laptop after a freeze.

At this point I'm stumped and it's starting to affect my productivity, any suggestions for troubleshooting this issue?

Re: 15 Macbook Pro (11,5) freezing periodically

I am booting Arch on a Mac as well. Can you tell us what DE/WM do you use? I assume that the issue is not about Arch Linux, but has sth to do with the environment. My suggestions are trying to use Gnome/KDE/XFCE out of box and see whether or not it works fine.

I am using Gnome 3.22 with gnome-shell so pretty vanilla.

Re: 15 Macbook Pro (11,5) freezing periodically

@gnunn: Did you ever find a cause for this behaviour? I also have a MacBook 11,5 for work, and also experience the freezing (about 1-3 times a day) I tried different Kernels (linux-macbook from AUR, linux 4.7 and 4.8 variants and linux-lts from core.

I once did have a general protection fault error in journalctl related to the radeon graphics module, but in other cases journal didn't give any hints. After the freeze the only way to get back to a working system is a hard poweroff (holding the powerbutton at least 4 seconds)

I run i3-wm with compton as my Window Manager.

Re: 15 Macbook Pro (11,5) freezing periodically

I did not definitively find the root cause, however I no longer have the issue. If you look at the AUR page for the linux-macbook (https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/linux-macbook), the maintainer suggested resetting the PRAM on the macbook. I did do that and experienced one last hang afterwards but since then it's been clear sailing with no further issues. I'm not 100% if resetting the PRAM fixed the issue or a package update, but I'd suggest trying resetting the PRAM to see if it works for you.

I experience also freezing on my MacBook 11,5, but only if I run compton. Without I have no issues, so I figured the problem must lie there...

Re: 15 Macbook Pro (11,5) freezing periodically

Small update on this topic:

I deactivated compton at the beginning of the week, which caused the freezes to happen a lot less frequently, but they still happen (first one since Monday was today). So compton seems to play a role in triggering the bug, but isn't the only cause.

FYI here is the log from just before the freeze happened (last entry in the logs before the forced reboot), unfortunately a search for this doesn't yield anything helpful so far:

Re: 15 Macbook Pro (11,5) freezing periodically

I also experience random freezes at least one time a day.
On a mid-2015 macbook pro 15", using awesome WM on stock kernel.

I'll try reseting PRAM and see what happens.

Re: 15 Macbook Pro (11,5) freezing periodically

I switched to xorg modesetting driver today instead of xf86-video-ati (since it is my work notebook I don't need any of the special stuff of the ati-driver). Since I had a freeze after 1-2h of work with the recent linux-macbook kernel (from AUR, version 4.8.16), and no freeze happened so far after about 3h, I am slightly hopefull it will have an effect.

I'll keep you posted if it helps in the long run.

Re: 15 Macbook Pro (11,5) freezing periodically

Well, unfortunately I have bad news too, although occuring not as frequently as with the ati xorg driver, the freezes are still there with the modesetting one. So it seems to be a bug in the kernel module causing it (as also indicated by the log output form the crashes).

The error is at the end of the journal log of the last boot, which can be viewed with

journalctl -b -1

I get the radeon error only sometimes too, not on every freeze. I couldn't recognize any pattern for when the messages appear or don't appear so far.

Re: 15 Macbook Pro (11,5) freezing periodically

I have been having this problem as well.  It almost always happened when I had video or music playing from the browser.  I noticed that several times before the freeze I was being underclocked because of heat issues.  I installed mbpfan yesterday and only had one freeze later in the day.  This morning I edited mbpfan.conf and dropped the low/high/max temps.  So far no freezes and I have been doing a lot of video.

low_temp = 55
high_temp = 60
max_temp = 75

EDIT:  Spoke to soon, system just crashed.  But it does seem to help.

Re: 15 Macbook Pro (11,5) freezing periodically

I tried launching 2 glxgears in paralel without fps limit

vblank_mode=0 glxgears

Temperature grew arround 100°C for 5 minute without any freeze

So I guess it's not temperature related.

[edit] I didn't had any freeze on the new stock linux kernel for today
4.9.6-1-ARCH

Re: 15 Macbook Pro (11,5) freezing periodically

Well, I also had the first Freeze today with AMDGPU, meaning the Picture completely froze, except for the mouse pointer. mouse clicks and Keyboard input was ignored completely, and I only could do a hard reset (holding the power button).
So unfortunately the amdgpu driver doesn't seem to fix this issue sad

lucky you for having logs, I don't have anything…
