Ncmpcpp/mpd taking exclusive control of my sound card.

Hi!

I would like to know why when i'm using ncmpcpp i cannot hear any other sound like rainymood or youtube. Seems like mpd takes exclusive control of the sound card.

I don't like this feature at all. How can i fix that?

This is expected behaviour if using plain ALSA.

Use pulseaudio and configure mpd appropriately.

No, it didn't "fix" anything. It just shifted the brokeness one space to the right. - jasonwryan

You don't have to use PA - see Dmix on Wiki ALSA page

But it is considered easier and PulseAudio provides other benefits.

Why not what?

Just use PA, unless you have a computer with limited resources.

Re: Ncmpcpp/mpd taking exclusive control of my sound card.

You don't have to because alsa has its own mixer - which however should be loaded if you don't have a HW mixer (typical for intel HDA chips, dedicated soundcards have HW mixers)

I'd say we should first figure the actual conditions
- whether you're using PA already
- whether explicitly adding dmix  helps
- your sound config: "aplay -L"
- and the mpd configuration - notably any audio_output settings
