Xrandr not showing VGA output (but display is partially accessable)

I am using two monitors, one connected to my NVIDIA card (using DVI) and one connected to my intel processor (using VGA).

My xrandr only shows the DVI output, and does not show the VGA output.

Output of xrandr and lspci:

[main@samurai ~]$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 8 x 8, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 16384 x 16384
DVI-I-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-I-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-D-0 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 531mm x 298mm

DP-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

[main@samurai ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th Gen Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 06)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK104 [GeForce GTX 760] (rev a1)

Now, I know the monitor is connected and can be seen, as with my current Xorg.config (shown below) I am able to access the second monitor (VGA intel) with my cursor. I cannot move windows over to the monitor nor do anything except move my cursor over to that monitor, and the cursor shows as an "x" when hovered over that screen. Further proof that the monitor works is that I was able to use xinerama to work with multihead (as in, when I was using xinerama the monitor worked perfectly as a second monitor i.e. I had multihead working).

From what I have read, I believe that the problem is not related to microcode (as I couldn't find anything big about it in my xorg.0.log, which can be found below), and may be related to drivers, however I am really not sure and could use some help with solving my problem.

Re: Xrandr not showing VGA output (but display is partially accessable)

You've a zaphod setup. Try "xterm -display :0.1 &"
Given xterm is installed, one will open on the  other screen (and output) and you can enter it with the cursor to pass it input focus. Typing "xrandr -q" there will likely reveal your VGA output and you can launch eg. fluxbox/openbox/icewm there (desktop environments like kde or gnome might be more "tricky" to run in such multihead evironments) to use the screen.
You won't be able to move windows around - that's normal, expected and "by design".

I can't say whether you can combine both devices, but turning xinerama off has certainly the perceived effect in your configuration.

Running the xterm command will open terminal on the other screen, however I still cannot focus it with my cursor. How would I go about fixing this problem?

Being able to move windows around is what I am trying to do aswell, and I thought that would be achievable with xrandr as "it can fully replace the old Xinerama setup".

I'm also not to sure what a zaphod setup is, but from what I understand it as, it means that the monitors are set up separately for separate use, which is not what I want. I want both monitors connected.

Is that possible at all?

Re: Xrandr not showing VGA output (but display is partially accessable)

As soon as you move the mouse in, it should receive focus - but the WM on the other screen could perceive that as focus stealing and revert the focus.

It might be possible or not - depends on the hardware :-P
"xrandr --listproviders"?

"xrandr --listproviders"?

[main@samurai ~]$ xrandr --listproviders
Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x1e1 cap: 0x1, Source Output crtcs: 4 outputs: 6 associated providers: 0 name:NVIDIA-0
[main@samurai ~]$

And my wm is awesomewm.

Re: Xrandr not showing VGA output (but display is partially accessable)

No idea how awesome would react, but also call

DISPLAY=:0.1 xrandr --listproviders

(because the current setup is still split)

Is it not possible for xrandr to function the same as xinerama, as in having the two screens put together in harmony?

Re: Xrandr not showing VGA output (but display is partially accessable)

This is not an xrandr/xinerama thing. You need to be able to "merge" the two graphics chips in order to treat them as one display server.
If you were eg. only using the nvidia OR the intel chip (and associated outputs), and would *not* configure anything, you'd simply get one giant display server across all outputs and could control the layout via the Randr extension (ie. xrandr)

Read here for a start: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/PRIME, but given the nvidia capabilities, this probably won't work (while may work using the nouveau driver)

Re: Xrandr not showing VGA output (but display is partially accessable)

hi, I have the exact same problem
Fresh arch install
I have a laptop with a gtx 1060.
Installed the nvidia drivers from the nvidia package
the xorg.conf generated by nvidia-xconfig  detected my hdmi output which is connected to the gtx, but didn't detect the laptop display

so I decided to create  the next config file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "Layout0"
        Screen 0 "nvidia"
        Screen 1 "intel" LeftOf "nvidia"
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "HDMI1"
EndSection

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "eDP1"
        Option "DPMS" "true"
         Modeline "1920x1080_60.00" 173.00 1920 2048 2248 2576 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "nvidia"
        Driver "nvidia"
        VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
        BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier "intel"
        Driver "modesetting"
        BusID "PCI:0:2:0"
# Option "Monitor-eDP-1" "intel"
EndSection

section "screen"
        Identifier "nvidia"
        Device "nvidia"
        #monitor "HDMI1"
        #defaultdepth 24
        #subsection "display"
# depth 24
# endsubsection
         option "allowemptyinitialconfiguration"
endsection

section "screen"
        Identifier "intel"
        Device "intel"
        #monitor "eDP1"
         option "allowemptyinitialconfiguration"
endsection

my laptop display just shows an "X"as a cursor, i can move it around and can also spawn a terminal there but can't access/focuse it(by executing DISPLAY=:0.1 st).
if I change the order of the displays like this ...

 Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "Layout0"
        Screen 0 "intel" LeftOf "nvidia"
        Screen 1 "nvidia"
EndSection

then the laptop display  works but the hdmi one has the same behavior as the laptop before the change

Help.
Thanks.

Re: Xrandr not showing VGA output (but display is partially accessable)

This is most likely an optimus system, so see https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA_Optimus
You may face random unrelated issues, but you do not want to pursue a zaphod setup or even xinerama (as it conflicts w/ xrandr and much of the fancy stuff blindly relies on the latter these days)
If things son't work w/ the optimus setup, create a new thread and post your xorg log there.

the xorg.conf generated by nvidia-xconfig

Don't.
No config generator produces usable configs for optimus systems and its also not required.

Re: Xrandr not showing VGA output (but display is partially accessable)

Hi thanks for the reply.
It works now.
I deleted my custom config and created a new one as the wiki says

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-nvidia-drm-outputclass.conf

Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "intel"
    MatchDriver "i915"
    Driver "modesetting"
EndSection

Section "OutputClass"
    Identifier "nvidia"
    MatchDriver "nvidia-drm"
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "AllowEmptyInitialConfiguration"
    Option "PrimaryGPU" "yes"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia/xorg"
    ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"
EndSection
