Xorg crashing since update

Hi, since I updated my system I'm getting random crashes back to the TTY. I can't reproduce the crash by performing any particular action, it just happens after a few (~5-30) minutes after I start X.
I normally run the linux-vfio kernel, but I have confirmed that the same crash occurs on linux-vfio-lts as well as the normal linux kernel.

I ran startx -logverbose 6 to see if X would output anything in the logs. After each crash the output says xinit: connection to X server lost, but the log file itself doesn't seem to contain much useful information:

Next I thought that maybe my window manager was crashing, so I configured i3 to output debug logs, but couldn't find anything useful. Here is the relevant part:

I have got quite a similar problem regarding my recent machine upgrade yesterday. The issue may have appeard first on Thursday (2017-01-12) when the new Xorg-1.19 packages where published in extra repository.

Due to lack of time, I have not been able to find a satisfying solution yet, but a rollback to the state of 2017-01-11 would be a production saver. Then, the last Xorg-1.18 packages have been distributed.

To do so, you may to set your mirror to

Server = https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2017/01/11/$repo/os/$arch

and do a

pacman -Syyuu

which will force "update" your database and force a rollback of your installed packages to the state of Jan, 11th 2017.

The crash issue will possibly be fixed soon by someone else, so I do not see any disadvantages (except for security considerations if existing) not to run the latest updates at the moment.

I hope this will help for now.

Incidentally, I had issues after updating Xorg today where the system would hang when trying to load X.
Turns out that the Xorg 1.9 update somehow deleted/corrupted my xf86-video-amdgpu driver. I had to chroot in from a live image and force-reinstall it. Worked OK after that...

Your bug report says Intel driver but several people have the same issue with nVidia cards too.

To add my use case, I'll say that after updating:

I am unable to start xorg1.9 if Xinerama is enabled in my xorg.conf.
If I disable it, I can work normally, alas only on one screen-monitor. Otherwise everything else seems fine.
I am using nvidia cards and nouveau driver.
I have three monitors spanned over one pcie nvidia card and one onboard nvidia graphics.
After adding mirrored repo and downgrading as per @gertoe 's suggestions, everything is working as it was before the xorg1.9 update

Xinerama is considered deprecated by XRandR, so you probably may try this solution using the proprietary nvidia driver.

Note: Due to some security patches published last week, holding back updates should be rethought. Instead, one may try to replace the intel video driver with the generic modesetting driver. I have switched last week and did not have any crash at all with current Xorg 1.19.1 since then. Keep in mind, that some desktop resolutions could be missing after using modesetting driver and the output names of your card may change. Adding missing resolutions can be done using XRandR as described here.

If I recall correctly I was not able to get XRandR working across non-identical cards when I tried it a long time ago
before having to settle with Xinerama.

For me xorg-server 1.19.1-1 is still crashing.

Well, then you have to keep the old xorg-server in the short run until there are any severe security issues. To keep the rest of your system up to date, you may

downgrade your system to the last stable state (as noted above),
use
```
IgnoreGroup = xorg
```
in your pacman.conf and
do a system upgrade.

This will ignore all packages in the xorg group (and dependant ones) during a system upgrade. The rest of your system will be kept up to date.
