[arch64] and multimedia codecs

Okay, so my big question is about media codecs and the x86_64 platfrom. The question: what is the currently status of codecs that work on a pure 64-bit platform? So, if I nuke my 32-bit install, what would I give up on a pure x86_86 platform?

I've read what is a very logical statement about mplayer not working with win32 codecs under 64-bit linux. Are 64-bit codecs already out there or do we have to wait until these codecs mature more? Is there a good workaround to this probem?

Thanks

Re: [arch64] and multimedia codecs

I have no problems watching movies. Most movies are *.mpg or *avi. 95% of them will run without any trouble.

What I miss is the realplayer as some nice radiostations only use that codec for their streams sad

When we will find time we will look over every package if we can improve it in speed and features. Mplayer is one of them.

Re: [arch64] and multimedia codecs

So, what about sites that use Windows Media streams to distribute content? I've got a few sites that only work with WMA format. Will that work with 64-bit mplayer?

Re: [arch64] and multimedia codecs

you may run into trouble with codecs in the essential package only, which only are a few. most codecs have a native implementation in mplayer, worst case scenario would be that the driver is not optimized using assembler. shouldn't be too much of a problem though.

two "popular" codecs i would name that are problematic without binaries are real and wmv9+. the rest should work ok: h.264, Xvid, mpeg4v2, mpeg2, mpeg... what can you possibly want more? even duck or sega video are supported.  lol
