upgrade or reinstall?

I installed Arch on a non-technical friend's machine several months ago. This is still in the days of hotplug, prior to mkinitrd and xorg 7.0. I'm wondering if I would be better off at this point to just reinstall Arch from the .72 CD or do a pacman -Su  ??? Do you think the upgrade would go smoothly?

Re: upgrade or reinstall?

Go for pacman -Syu

(Make sure he's got a broadband connection.)

You'll surprise yourself.

You're unlikely to discover any problems which haven't been fully documented in these forums.

Re: upgrade or reinstall?

If prior to Xorg-7 then the Xorg-7 Migration Guide in the wiki is a good read.

Re: upgrade or reinstall?

also look for /etc/rc.conf.pacnew <i belive
you might want to change it to rc.conf for the
MOD_AUTOLOAD=yes
or make sure you grab hwd & lshwd then in daemons of rc.conf
hwd
also change fstab form /dev/discs/discX/partY
to /dev/hdaX  or /dev/sdaX whichever the case may be
then change your boot loader to the same naming scheme
run alsa.conf before reboot or removee all alsa stuff from /etc/modprobe.conf
thinking back i had an issue where my machine just kept on spitting line after line of it couldnt find the module never getting to a prompt

thats all i can think of
just make sure you got a rescue plan if things should go arye

Re: upgrade or reinstall?

If it was me I would just save whatever data is important and re-install.
Given that Arch installs so fast, and the amount of fuzzing to update from the "old" system to the current version my guess is that you will likely do it faster this way.
Naturally, this only works if you have a fast connection.  smile

Re: upgrade or reinstall?

yes an fresh install could be faster but not necessarily so
depends on what you want saved & configuring of machine requires

but giving in how old an install this is ,if all that needs to be addressed is taken care of
before reboot which almost all could be done while pacman -Syu is in progress.
then i would say an upgrade would be faster . it all depends on the person doing it & how good theyre memory/knowledge/typing speed  is

Re: upgrade or reinstall?

Hey Archies,

thanks for your excellent responses! I do believe that I could do the upgrade, but I think it will be faster if I backup their files and then just reinstall from the .72 CD
