Kmail, Kontact whatever..

I'm pretty sure that I'll get slated, but I've got to the point where I don't care I really have searched this forum and generally for solutions.

Kmail, but actually kontact I think ( and probably akonadi) has not worked for me for well over a year.  It appears automagically when I log in to KDE ... why? But that's not the annoying thing. Once I leave the app, and try to to check my emails again via the GUI, it takes literally 3-4 minutes' to put up a window.  If I launch it through the terminal 'as kmail', it's immediate (hence my suspicion at kontact). I can't see any error message in log files.

I've removed all the config files on numerous occasions, and even recently reinstalled the whole OS.
