gnome-terminal works fine when I start the gdm.service and log in using the display manger.
It give me this error:
$gnome-terminal
Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Error calling StartServiceByName for org.gnome.Terminal: Timeout was reached
gnome-terminal does works fine when I log in (do not use a display manger) using startx
I have seen all the threads about locale-gen etc and that does not work for me.
Any ideas.
Thanks for your attention.

I'm confused. You say it works both ways? What exactly isn't working?
Offline
When i dont use the gdm.service to start the DE it does not work.
When i use the startx command to start the DE ( meaning disable gdm.service) it works.
I hope this helps.

"I hope this helps."
Not the least.
How exactly do you run the session when it does *not* work.
What are the outputs* (in code tags, please!) of "loginctl session-status" and "ps fax" in that (failing) case?
*loginctl will not finish, just dump the output "loginctl session-status > session.status 2>&1" and paste from that file.

Here You go

Hah?
Ok, now you say it fails when using gdm, but in contradiction there's actually a gnome-terminal process in that case, but none in the startx case...
I'm not sure whether this is a matter of google translate or you're just kidding, but my best guess would be that you didn't attempt to start the terminal when dumping those outputs and the gdm session contains a somehow restored and deadlocked gnome-terminal process why the dbus invocation (of that process) fails.
For a wild guess, try to "pkill gnome-terminal" before attempting to open a (then new) instance.

I had started a gnome-terminal in each case to capture them in the log. In case of the the gdm it of course failed as I mentioned earlier in this thread.

Below is the session when I do not open a gnome-terminal.

as I mentioned earlier in this thread
Actually not - you may want to read your posts again ;-)
In case of the the gdm it of course failed as I mentioned earlier in this thread.
And here it gets weird, because your former posts says there's a gnome-terminal in the gdm case and none in the startx case.
I was looking for a dbus session daemon (which *is* there in the claimed gdm case; you didn't provide a process list for the startx case) but am actually still not sure about the actually failing condition.
Anyway, since there's a dbus session daemon, it very most likely *will* be the locale issue, so let's ensure everything is alright there.
Please dump

The mail I got had all locales on "C" (except for "LC_ALL=") - what changed between your original post and your edit?

I put these in my .bashrc
export LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8
export LANG=en_US.UTF-8
export LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
and rebooted.
And nothing changed.

Yeah, your .bashrc has exactly zero impact on the gnome shell (ie. where the terminal is launched from)
Remove that again, it's stashing the problem for the worse.
You *are* facing the locale problem - see https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/50069
There's a patch and apparently this also got fixed in latest updates.

I had to follow this thread and it got solved.
https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comm … e_problem/
my /etc/locale.conf looks like this
[ozooha@OZLinux ~]$ more /etc/locale.conf
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8
LC_NUMERIC=en_US.UTF-8

Locale#LANG:_default_locale means you should be able to remove all the lines starting LC from /etc/locale.conf
Locale#LANGUAGE:_fallback_locales as there is only one value specified for LANGUAGE it does not serve any function
From the above your locale should be equivalent to
LANG=en_US.UTF-8

Does not work loqs until I filled the enitre locale.conf ( see the above post)
if you start the gdm.service then this filling the entire locale.conf up is a requirement and not just having the LANG=en_US.UTF-8.
However if you don't go through the gdm.service route or use startx then having LANG=en_US.UTF-8 in your locale.conf is enough.
This is what I went through but for now the problem is solved.

Had seen that but it did not help me as I wan't getting those updates from the repo.
Yes you are right the .bashrc has zero impact so I removed it.
Thanks for everything though.
