[SOLVED] libkdewebkit.so missing from new version of kdelibs (4.14.28)

Hello there!

While trying to start Rkward, I got an error about libkdewebkit.so:

/usr/lib/kde4/libexec/rkward.frontend: error while loading shared libraries: libkdewebkit.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Poking around I found out it was in the kdelibs package. Was, because it's missing in the newest 4.14.28-2 version.

When I downgraded to 4.14.27-1, the file was there and Rkward started without issues.

I tried searching if it's moved in another package, but couldn't find any answer.

So - where can I get more information about this?

rkward is an AUR package, you need to rebuilt it when it's library dependencies are upgraded.

This is intentional https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/52645

I'd recommend to switch to the frameworks version if it's stable enough, otherwise patch rkward to get rid of the kdewebkit usage or (as a last resort) add a kdewebkit4 package to AUR that contains the missing library and headers

Ah, thank you!

I'll see what route I'm going to take. Rkward is not one of my frequently used applications, so probably will just use something else when I need R.

Re: [SOLVED] libkdewebkit.so missing from new version of kdelibs (4.14.28)

I'm really irked by the tendency to recommend IDEs like rwkard and rstudio (that said, rstudio has a large user base resulting in a good quantity of support, though I'm not too sure about the quality of that support).

I've worked with many students who started with one of those because they were afraid to run anything in a terminal.  Despite my encouragement to use R in the terminal, they opt for one of the IDEs.  After a few weeks they get really frustrated and conclude that R is a horrible language and hard to do any analyses in.  I convince them to try just regular "R" in the terminal before they completely give up on it.  In every case things suddenly start working better for them.

So you need something else to use R?  I'd recommend urxvt, or xterm, or even lxterminal or gnome-terminal.  Add on your favorite text-editor and you'll have a more flexible and robust "IDE" than rkward ever provided.

I did all of grad school (and my dissertation) using Rkward, never had an issue with it.
