Hard freeze playing video with kernel 4.8/4.9

Hello,

My system randomly freezes when playing video using Chrome or Firefox. At least, that is the most frequent case although I recall one instance when this happened while moving files. The only way to recover is the poweroff or hard reset the machine. It is unreachable via ssh.

The problem started a while back during one of the early updates to Linux 4.8x and persists with the latest kernel 4.9.8-1. I have searched high and low for any reports of a similar problem but haven't seen anything on Arch forums or even out on the web. I am stumped because the logs show nothing. The system freezes hard and nothing appears to be flushed to disk. Journalctl only shows a reboot.

I have tried the following:

1. Replace nvidia with nouveau.
2. Disable all tweaks to browsers and flash.
3. Installed a fresh instance of Arch (XFCE) just to test if the issue occurs ( it does).

The LTS kernel works fine with nvidia-lts. I have tried Manjaro on the same machine with the same results. The LTS kernel works flawlessly whereas anything after and including 4.8 causes lockups. I am including my hw config below.

I will be most grateful for any pointers on how to proceed.

TIA.

Update: Fixed graphics string in hwinfo. I am using Nvidia drivers.
Update: Changed title.
