Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Dell xps 13 9360 bios 1.2.3 update released a few days ago.  Successfully updated bios.  However, nvme devices are no longer found with ahci disabled in bios.  Setting to AHCI from disabled allowed me to boot.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Hello,

didn't want to create separate thread for this.
So I'm almost happy XPS 9360 user. The issue which struggles me is power consumption after resume.
I've got FHD version, 256G PCIe, vanilla 4.8.13 from core.

First, my powerstat results before any suspend (system freshly booted):

Running for 477.0 seconds (159 samples at 3.0 second intervals).
Power measurements will start in 3 seconds time.

So, what's going on here? Why my idle laptop takes 2W more after suspend/resume from sleep?
I'm not using any power management tools, it's basically newly installed Arch.
Anyone can reproduce this behavior (?) on his side? Not really sure what I can do about that.
I also noticed that current CPU freq is different after resume, don't know if it's related though.
I'm using default 'powersave' governor (which scales 400 MHz - 3.10 GHz) but before suspend CPU actually never goes lower than 800MHz (as you see on powerstat snippet), after resume it's 400MHz or even less.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Hello,
I use a self-made kernel 4.9. with ck-patches and nvme-patch (at 1000 Hz tick-rate, compiled with all possible Skylake compiler optimizations). I have the same power issue as you described. ~3.9W idle, lowest display brightness (not turned off), KDE running with XServer and freshly booted. About 2W more after suspend/resume from sleep. I checked it with both powerstat and powertop. One interesting thing I recognised: after suspend/resume there are more entries at the "Tunables"-section of powertop.

At kernels <4.9. the sleep was not reliable at all, even the BIOS update to 1.2.3 didn't helped for me.

At present I only use "hibernate":
+ no discharge at all (the sleep discharge is to big for me, less than a week standby eats the whole battery)
+ the encrypted disk is save (swap partition is encrypted as well)
- wake up is not as fast as suspend (due to the bios)
- less life time of the ssd

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Thanks xaverlalo, good to know it's not my configuration only.
I noticed powertop differences as well, following devices appeared when system resumed:

Runtime PM for PCI Device Intel Corporation DSL6340 Thunderbolt 3 Bridge [Alpine Ridge 2C 2015]
Runtime PM for PCI Device Intel Corporation DSL6340 Thunderbolt 3 Bridge [Alpine Ridge 2C 2015]
Runtime PM for PCI Device Intel Corporation DSL6340 Thunderbolt 3 Bridge [Alpine Ridge 2C 2015]
Runtime PM for PCI Device Intel Corporation DSL6340 Thunderbolt 3 NHI [Alpine Ridge 2C 2015]
Runtime PM for PCI Device Intel Corporation DSL6340 USB 3.1 Controller [Alpine Ridge]

But according to powertop they're not eating anything so I'd be surprised if they're responsible for this.
Guess just have to live with it right now, it's so annoying though and difficult to debug.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Okay, apparently it was related to thunderbolt.
I was playing with UEFI settings, seems like unchecking 'Enable Thunderbolt Boot Support' did the trick here.
Not using (yet) usb-c at all so I can live with that feature disabled.

Also, thanks @zhjn921224 for sharing synaptics config, it's far more usable than libinput which has problem to recognize small movements which drives me crazy.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Wow... thank you very much! This just worked for me as well! After finding out that the list of possible "Tunables" raised after standby I also played around with the UEFI settings but couldn't find the right option. How much time did you spent searching the right option? I think you should tell DELL. It could be a firmware-bug they may solve with the next firmware.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Hi,

I posted a big query on having wireless connection problems in the Newbie section, but probably I should have posted here.

https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=222039

perhaps it's worth moving, or even deleting and adding the full question here. Happy to do whatever makes most sense.

No, lspci shows it is Qualcomm Atheros QCA6174, and it works fine without any configuration.

I wish I experienced the same!

If anyone has some ideas I'd be hugely appreciated

Thanks

Welcome to the Arch Linux forums.  Your request is a bit ambiguous; I don't think I want to merge that thread in here -- this thread is already multi-purpose enough making it hard to search.  I can move your thread to either laptop issues or networking.  If you would like action, go to your thread and use the 'report' link and leave the moderators a note explaining your request.  One of us are usually around.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

My Dell xps full equipped Developer Edition arrived today.

I have an DA200 Cat6/HDMI/USB adapter from USB-C.

I have strange effects with the MAC Address of the adapter.
It seems the ethernet interface get a MAC out of my Notebook. According to the vendor lookup of the adapters MAC (printed on the device) it is not Dell and after connect I have an Dell MAC.

according to ip a:
d4:81:d7:XX:XX:XX

according to label:
00:24:9B:XX:XX:XX

The default Ubuntu installation shows not the Dell MAC but the 00:24:XX

Also a strange effect after disabling WLAN in NetworkManager ip a shows an other MAC which is flapping every time I disabled WLAN.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

My 9360 (QHD model, csme with Windows) on an up-to-date (package wise, but new installation) 20170101 arch install, keeps disconnecting when I connect to the internet through wifi (I'm experimenting the same issue as the one reported here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/870412/w … ss-network more info can also be found at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … ug/1520343 but I hsve already tried the fixes mentioned there without any luck)

I have not been able to fix the issue and dont know why just some users are getting affected by this, Maybe this is something that got buggy very recently?

Can anyone with completely working wifi (no random disconnects or hang-ups) upload their contents of /lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/ so I can test them in my machine?

If anyone needs the output of any command I'll post it, ant sort of help here would be appreciated.

Thanks!

High guys! I'm going to buy some new sky/kaby lake laptop. What's about power consumption on linux compared to windows? I've heard that linux is unable to go below PC3 power state. Is it getting worse after going to suspend? What's the lifetime on linux compared to windows or official tech specs?

Powertop shows my 9360/kabylake reaching C1E-SKL, C3-SKL, C6-SKL, and C8-SKL states.   The intel power state names have changed so much in the last few years, I'm not sure how these relate to PC3, but my understanding is that C8/C9/C10 are newer super low power states starting with Haswell.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Does anyone have issues with Bluetooth not working after resuming from suspend?

It kind of worked for me before, but since the last kernel update, or the one before that (I'm not sure), Bluetooth doesn't work at all after resuming from sleep.
Before I had to be careful to disconnect my mouse (Logitech MX Anywhere 2) before going to sleep, otherwise it wouldn't connect after resume (blueman would say it was already connected).

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Are you all booting in UEFI mode or legacy? I went to legacy, not sure what the additional value is of an insecure UEFI boot? This is my first UEFI machine...

I just got a 9360 qhd and don't hear any coil noise but when I install the WD-15 dock and connect it to my external monitor there is a lot of noise coming in over HDMI?! I really need to turn the volume down on that. When I have it plugged into my other laptop (I didn't plug directly into the XPS13 yet, I just got it last night) it's crystal clear which seems odd, as if it an issue with the dock.

I'm booting UEFI, I didn't know there was an alternative when I installed.
What's the difference apart from the bootloader?

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Posting here because I haven't found anyone else with this problem. FHD model, Running latest drivers installed with Windows before getting Arch on it, video driver is mesa but this happens even in tty1 before I startx.

I've got the strangers screen flicker, quite like the one in this video but https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2wn5NKr0Do but not usually as frequent. I haven't been able to really figure out the cause either. Sometimes it'll happen like in the video, other times it'll go hours and be just fine. I've tried changing kernel boot parameters but that had no effect, I've tried both mesa and  xf86-video-intel flickering happens in both. There aren't any errors on boot or from any logs (Xorg, ect.) that I can find.

All I've been able to guess is that it's the CABC (the auto adjustment on the screen brightness) and it's messing around and clashing with the driver and/or hardware.

I don't think I'll be able to use this laptop long term with this flickering, what do you all think? Return for a different modle that I can turn off CABC or just RMA?

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

I'm having two major issues with this model, apart from that everything else seems to work.

First, sometimes when I reboot it just will not list the touchpad as a device when I use xinput and the touchpad basically won't work at all. I'm not sure why that only happens sometimes on a reboot but it is incredibly annoying, at first this happened because the id would jump from 10-11 so I just set my config to point directly to the device name but now it just seems to not recognize the touchpad on start at times.

Second is waking from suspend the touchpad will again not work. This time however it is entirely recognized still by the system but libinput-debug-event for example will give no output when trying to use it. I am unsure of what module I should be loading/unloading to try and get it to work again in this instance. I also can't seen to restart X, everytime I try killing the process even with -9 it doesn't actually seem to end and just remains in my running processes forcing me to reboot which could lead again to the first problem.

So pretty much all my problems revolve around the touchpad, and I am on the latest BIOS, 4.9.9-1 kernel and all my packages are up to date. The only thing that I could see maybe causing these problems is laptop-mode-tools but if it was I don't really know how to begin to check that. I've also tried checking dmesg but I don't really see anything out of the ordinary there.

I uninstalled it for now, will report back if I continue getting the same problems.

Only config I have relating to my touchpad is this in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

Section "InputClass"
    Identifier "touchpad"
    Driver "libinput"
    MatchProduct	"DLL075B:01 06CB:76AF Touchpad"
    MatchIsTouchpad "on"
    Option "Tapping" "on"
    Option "TappingButtonMap" "lrm"
EndSection

EDIT: Uninstalled laptop-mode-tools this morning and since have resumed from suspend multiple times with no issue, as well as a couple reboots. I guess that was causing the issues, I'll make another edit if it happens again.

Ok so it started happening again, but permanently. Did some quick searching and found this
http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo … t/19997989

Not good news, touchpad doesnt work in BIOS, Windows, OR Linux

And this seems to be not that uncommon... guess I have to get the motherboard replaced.
