Epson scanner drivers - iscan or imagescan3: difference, requirements.

Hi all,

I'm trying to get an Epson XP-235 all-in-one working as a scanner, and I'm having trouble piecing together what I need.  According to the Epson site, I need to install imagescan3, which I can get from here: http://support.epson.net/linux/src/scanner/imagescanv3/  (It seems to be the same as this Github repository: https://github.com/utsushi/imagescan).

It looks like that's a separate piece of software or a rewrite of the iscan package available in the Community repository (iscan 2.30.3.1-1) and recommended in the wiki.

So, if anyone can clarify, is there a reason iscan 2 is packaged in community and not imagescan3?  (Perhaps the latter drops some support?)
Does anyone else have experience with this or similar models?

I'm curious as to whether I need to package imagescan3 myself, or what the difference is between the two, since they seem to have the same name.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.
