[SOLVED] X fails to initialise GLX extension with Quadro K1100

Hi,

I am trying to use the nvidia driver. I intend to do some CUDA work on my laptop and wanted to have everything compatible with Nvidia. I believe my card is not on the legacy driver list so I should install the latest driver. Following the wiki I installed nvidia, nvidia-lts and nvidia-libgl. Still, X tells me

[ 10.284] (EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)

glxinfo breaks with

%glxinfo

This is the lspci output

%lspci -k | grep -A 2 -E "(VGA|3D)"

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107GLM [Quadro K1100M] (rev a1)
	Subsystem: Lenovo Device 221e
	Kernel driver in use: nvidia

I have a feeling there's something special about Quadro that I am missing perhaps? The wiki references GeForces mainly. Please let me know if you have any ideas.

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to initialise GLX extension with Quadro K1100

It tries to load the nvidia glx module but the server runs on the modesetting driver (for the intel chip)
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA_Optimus
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee

What system is that exactly (you might be able to choose to only use the nvidia chip and ignore the intel one, but wasting battery this way)

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to initialise GLX extension with Quadro K1100

What do you mean asking about the system? The OS is Arch Linux. The laptop is Lenovo ThinkPad W541. It's more of a mobile work-station than a laptop and I almost never use it without plugging to the grid. I can give Bumblebee a try but I am almost certainly better off with just using nvidia.

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to initialise GLX extension with Quadro K1100

The laptop is Lenovo ThinkPad W541

This. It's an optimus system and apparently* has BIOS  switches for IGP and GPU.
Disabling the intel chip there is the most straightforward solution; otherwise you'll have to write an xorg config file (nvidia-settings should be able to do this, but i'm not sure it runs w/o glx anymore)

You basically have to create a device entry, pick "nvidia" as Driver and link that Device in the Screen section.

* there seem to be several revisions on the same brand

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to initialise GLX extension with Quadro K1100

Thanks. That makes sense, but I am still struggling with it.

1) I wasn't able to find a way to switch off the integrated card in BIOS. There was a Standard and Advanced mode with the latter suggesting that it will use the discrete rather than integrated card, but that didn't change anything

2) I went with using nvidia propriety and setting up xorg.conf as described in optimus nvidia wiki page. Here I got a little further. When I just run startx, I get everything to work. glxgears and glxinfo give satisfactory output and OpenGL applications work. However, for that xorg.conf to work, I need xrandr commands in my .xinitrc. Otherwise I get a black screen. I use slim as my display manager and I got into this problem.

Side note: What surprises me in all this is that my previous setting worked okay. I would have noticed this misconfiguration, I think as paraview wouldn't crash with a coredump, but maybe before it was using something else?

Don't use slim it's unmaintaned and broken with systemd's logind (there are a lot more potential problems than your graphics not working from using slim)

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to initialise GLX extension with Quadro K1100

I am happy to switch to lightdm, sddm or xdm, but I am still struggling with setting them up so that these xrandr commands are included in x startup:

xrandr --setprovideroutputsource modesetting NVIDIA-0
xrandr --auto

Also, it's just as well I am switching: didn't notice the message about slim on the Arch Wiki.

For LightDM please post the contents of /etc/lightdm/display_setup.sh, /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf and /var/log/lightdm/lightdm.log plus the output from the following

$ls -la /etc/lightdm/display_setup.sh

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to initialise GLX extension with Quadro K1100

I am focused on LightDM at the moment and I think I've found relevant info in the wiki, but it's a new display manager for me so I am struggling a little. At the moment I get flickering black screen and cursor screen after

systemctl start lightdm

Here's the output you asked:

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to initialise GLX extension with Quadro K1100

Right... I've read the log file and find a typo in lightdm.conf. There was /usr path there and it was meant to be /etc. Now I can get to the display manager. Many, many thanks to all that supplied helpful hints here.

Re: [SOLVED] X fails to initialise GLX extension with Quadro K1100

Marking as solved.

Just to summarise: the problem was the presence of two graphic cards and Intel getting in the way. It appears there was no option to switch it off in BIOS, so I had to follow up the procedure described here. Then the problem escalated somewhat as the solution required adding certain xrandr commands and I was using an obsolete display manager which didn't allow it.  Switching to lighdm and following this procedure solved it.
