Having some trouble on a recently installed Arch on an iMac from around 2010. I can play sound through the speakers fine, but when I plug in headphones I get no sound. I can see the levels being shown in Pavucontrol changing as they should, but still no sound. The headphones are unmuted in pavucontrol. When I run alsamixer, it shows PulseAudio as the card, but if I change to the internal HDA Intel PCH, it shows everything unmuted. I've got the following related packages installed:

I'm going to assume you've tried the obvious stuff such as ensuring you have your volume turned up enough to be audible, and thus wont elaborate on this possibility. The last part of pacmd list-sinks suggests that everything is working, however, I'm concerned about the hardware flags:

In particular, I'm curious about HW_MUTE_CTRL. This may be a result of my general lack of understanding to the purpose of said flags, but it makes me wonder: Do you have any hardware based audio switches? Does trying fn + 9/10/11 do anything? Such features are not uncommon with, say, wifi adapters. One possible culprit of muted audio is auto-mute in alsamixer itself. From alsamixer, change your card to the analog one, press F5 to show everything, and scroll all the way to the right. I'm using pulseaudio right now and this is enabled, but you may want to try toggling it. When you do this, have a terminal open running speaker-test without arguments. If you can suddenly hear static noise, you've found the problem. From pavucontrol, try the same thing. Toggle some of the buttons to see what happens. Specifically, change the port from output devices, and possibly the card profile under configuration. Make sure to monitor the changes this causes in alsamixer! Have both open when testing. The volume on your sink is at 25% are you sure that that's loud enough for you to hear something? I somewhat agree with the notion that maybe a hardware switch might be triggered somewhere, other than that, sometimes it also happens that pulse switches the profile but the hardware mapping is incorrect. So you might want to try to enforce a switch to the speakers and check if you get output from the headphones by using
pacmd set-sink-port alsa_output.pci-0000_00_1b.0.analog-stereo analog-output-speaker
as for the auto-mute @JB it is currently disabled as can be seen in the amixer output, but still maybe toggling that around might help.

Nah nothing like that. No hardware switches. And mashing the function keys didn't change anything either. Tried pressing each while looking at the flags from list-sinks between with no change.

Yeah I've tried changing the volume around with headphones plugged in, and I can see the levels increase correspondingly but still not output. I also tried running that command you mentioned which did change the output to speakers which worked, then tried changing back to headphones in pavucontrol and still no output
I've also tried toggling the auto-mute with no effect.
