[Solved] How can I change the primary gpu for output - pci passthough

Hello

this thread is connected to this one.

I'm trying to setup pci passthrough for my gpu as stated in the other linked thread. I've run into the issue now, that I when I try to detach the guest gpu from my host system it still grabs it for my main output during booting and therefore I don't get and graphical output after a certain point.

It seems to me, that the gpu is not fully claimed for passthrough. I don't get the output "... enabling device ..." like in the example in the wiki. The gpu drives shows as pci-vfio though.

Does anyone have a idea how I can fix this?
I can't specify in my board BIOS from which PEG slot it should look for the gpu, only options are auto, peg, pci, igfx.

regards

post full dmesg or journalctl please.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.

(A works at time B)  && (time C > time B ) ≠  (A works at time C)

Re: [Solved] How can I change the primary gpu for output - pci passthough

I overlooked that journalctl without paramaters gives logs from many boots, that's why it's so big.

You should enable Intel microcode updates , but that won't solve the issue.

I'm 99% sure your issue is caused by a limitation of your motherboard / firmware.

Check page 8 of your motherboard manual, the  GA-Z77-DS3H/GA-H77-DS3H Motherboard Block Diagram
Note the difference between the PCIEX16 and the PCIEX4 slots .

Then look at page 48, description "Init Display First " .
Your motherboard has one dedicated PCI express graphics slot, and 3 general purpose PCI express slots.

Your motherboard allows 3 choices for primary display :
a PCI slot
integrated graphics
PCIEX16 slot

Put the videocard you want to use for the guest in PCIEX4 and the one for the host in PCIEX16 , then everything should work as intended.

Re: [Solved] How can I change the primary gpu for output - pci passthough

Thank you for your help,

Unfortunately It's physically not possible to install the gpu into the second slot, the card is just too big for it.

I guess the dream to finally switch to arch for good is dead for another few years...

MAYBE there's another option with some limitations .

Some users have had success with dynamically binding / unbinding videocards .

You would boot with the R290 bound to the host, then use a script that does this :

unbind the r290 from the host
bind it to the guest
switch to the guest and run whatever
when the guest shuts down, unbind the card from the guest and back to the host.
