Problem with resolving domain names.

Hi all,

Fist please excuse me for my eventually lame question, but I read the manual, the wiki, the FAQ, searched the forums, google and even yahoo. Several times for a few days. I would like to try Arch, as it seems a top distro, but a simple think is stopping me.

I have really stupid problem that I haven't encountered with another distro (I suppose the problem is still in my TV...). My Arch can't resolve domain names. I configure my network AND nameservers with the install, but damain name resolution service is unavailable. I even resoled the repos IP from a live cd, so I was able to use pacman and install new packages, but never managed to fix the resolution problem. What is freaking me is the fact that it should be something dead simple like puting two IPs in  /etc/resolv.conf but it just don't work. I don't have arch install now and I use another distro, so I can't give exact outputs now, but generally it always says that 'resolution service is not available'. I had base system installed.

I would like to give myself a try with Arch, so if abybody has ANY idea what the problem could be, I can install a base system easily.

If there's a ready answer that I did not find, plase post it and abuse me.

If everything else fails, read the manual.

Re: Problem with resolving domain names.

You're unlikely to get your request for abuse filled here, it's generally pretty friendly and abuse-free.   However now that I said that I'm sure everybody will pile on.    big_smile

As for your real question, it is hard to troubleshoot with the limited info you can give.  I'd suggest re-installing your base install and verifying you can get pacman to work.  After doing that and getting your settings how you think they should be, post the relevant files like resolv.conf and output of commands like ifconfig -a and netstat -nr so we can have a look.  Hopefully somebody can help you out then.

Good luck.

Re: Problem with resolving domain names.

Perhaps, just perhaps...you have a fixed IP and utilize a LAN for internet access.  The dual IP entry for DNS allows alternate IP's for the server.

If you have a LAN you may also need a gateway IP.  It is entered in rc.conf and requires that the gateway be "initialized" by removing the sybol "!" from the rc.conf (!gateway) entry.

If not initialized, domain resolution would not occur.

Welcome to arch 2006!

Re: Problem with resolving domain names.

Thanks for the replies, I jested with arch friendliness because the manual and the (so-called) FAQ are pretty harsh.

As lilsirecho suggested my computer is in a LAN and I have static real IP address and unfortunately (because this option for solution drops out) I have initialized my gateway. I have done this three times from scratch. I put may IP, mask, default gateway (and initialize it), az well as my DNSs. When I have some time I will do it again and post resolv.conf, proper parts of rc.conf and ouputs from various commands.

Now it occurred to me - if it is a problem with the gateway, I should not have any connection with the outer world. As I said I can ping any IP outside, but can not resolve the corresponding domain name (that is how I got pacman to work - I resolved the ftp IP from a live cd and put it in pacman.conf instead of address). What I mean is that I can ping 72.14.207.99, but not google.com.

If everything else fails, read the manual.

Re: Problem with resolving domain names.

Are you perfectly sure you done the following in rc.conf?

ROUTES=(gateway)

Bacause it sounds exactly like a problem I had when setting up my personal server. I could ping IPs but not domains.

Re: Problem with resolving domain names.

Hm, I can't be PERFECTLY sure, since, as I said, currently don't have an Arch installation and my memories are all smile I will make a new installation and run through everything all over again if this sounds like badly configure rc.conf.

Thanks for the reply.

Re: Problem with resolving domain names.

add the ip's of the nameservers into /etc/resolv.conf like this:
nameserver 111.222.333.444
hope this helps
