Toggling compositing KWin5 / plasma (useful for steam)

Hum....couldn't find anything on this and it really speeds things up (FPS wise).

Decided to share:

if [ `qdbus org.kde.KWin /Compositor org.kde.kwin.Compositing.active` = true ]; then qdbus org.kde.KWin /Compositor org.kde.kwin.Compositing.suspend; else qdbus org.kde.KWin /Compositor org.kde.kwin.Compositing.resume; fi

Re: Toggling compositing KWin5 / plasma (useful for steam)

I know, this post is quite old. But I had the very same idea today and came up with an automatic solution:

alex@galaxy:~$ cat /usr/local/bin/suspend_compositing
#!/bin/bash

qdbus org.kde.KWin /Compositor suspend

$*

qdbus org.kde.KWin /Compositor resume

This will disable compositing, run any command from the trailing command line and resume compositing afterwards with the current KWin

In Steam i set the Launch Options for every game to:

suspend_compositing optirun %command%

and whenever I start a game compositing will be paused and my dedicated gpu will be activated automatically.
