Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

The newer models shipped from Dell include an optional fingerprint reader. `lsusb` reports it as device ID

183a:0091

by Validity Sensors Inc. Model name appears to be "VFS7552" as per Dell's Windows drivers.

Has anyone had any luck getting this to work? I have yet to try it with fprint/fingerprint-gui.

I just ordered a model with fingerprint reader too. It seems it won't work though:

That's really unfortunate. I just suspected that it's going to take a while since it's rather new. I had the impression that Dell ensures every piece of hardware that comes with a project Sputnik device will be (eventually) supported on Linux. I will have a look in the Dell forums then...

Hello,

I have troubles having an external display work with display port. I have an apple A1790 adapter (I am not totatally sure it is the right one). HDMI works fine, but my display is quite old and to get full resolution I should use display port input.

Does anybody tried to use display port over USB-C?

Hi frank!
I remember you had the 9350 FHD and I see you have now 9360 QHD, could give us more information regarding battery life?
I am thinking about my future laptop but I have no idea if 9360 make a huge difference regarding battery life on QHD, if you have any number on "real-life" using would be wonderful smile
thanks

I believe if the components are similar you will get similar battery results.  For me I can't really say much.  My 9350 is i5 and FHD whereas the 9360 is i7 and QHD.  I was easily getting 11+ hours on the 9350 of light use + youtube.  On the 9360 it is more closer to the 7+ hours of same usage.  I haven't done any tests to validate these numbers, they are just my guesstimate.

With that said, I bought the 9360 directly from Dell.  The agent threw in the travel power companion.  I love the companion.  Fast charges my phones via usb and the laptop.  I travel quite a bit where I am in hotels more than I am home this year.  Checking into new places every few days or weeks.  It's handy to have the power companion.  Everything just stays plugged into it and I just pack it as it is.  Easy packing/deploy.  I know this isn't what you wanted to hear but I can't speak highly enough about it.  For those that don't travel as much, the power companion is not too important and you won't have much mileage.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

I'm experiencing the (well-documented)  keyboard double-press issues on my 9360, but exclusively with the space key. Analysing it in xev reveals that there are actually two key presses that get registered  (there is a key-down event) in between, often leading to a space getting inserted after the first letter of the new word. This means disabling autorepeat for space does not solve the issue.

In practice this makes typing really difficult (it occurs a _lot_) and typing tests such as 10fastfingers are impossible to complete.

One rabbit hole  I've started to go down is disabling space temporarily after every press as discussed in this SO answer, but I  can't quite get that to work.

Is anyone else affected and has a working solution?

Never had that issue of space repeating. I'm assuming you are on pure arch. Does this happen in console before X starts?

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Yep, it does. It's one of the oldest and most discussed XPS issues that I know (which is why I thought it may be fixed on this generation, oh well).

People are experiencing this across multiple OSes, so it's unlikely that this is a software issue. The current path I'm trying to go down is using XKB to activate BouncyKeys (filtering duplicate key presses) and then hooking into the notifications to repeat the key press if it wasn't a space.

To my surprise BouncyKeys does not seem to capture these key presses however, so this may not be a viable path hmm

Really? I'm just surprised. With the 9350 and the 9360 this is my first time hearing of this issue for this hardware on arch. Have you contacted dell for an rma? Are you on pure arch?

What's your specs? Bios version? Any tidbits in logs you see related? Post them? Maybe separate thread as this is not a common issue. Good luck!

Hey guys, is anyone else experiencing interesting behaviour with their trackpad? I've noticed that the first motion on the trackpad after a period of inactivity will fling the cursor across the screen. Using it after this initial jump works fine. I've reproduced it somewhat reliably by waiting for the keyboard backlight to turn off and trying to interact with the touchpad again. My desktop environment is Cinnamon and I'm using libinput.

Thanks!

frank604 wrote:

I'll make a separate thread about this eventually, just trying to find a solution that works for me first.

Most of the discussion of this in the last years has apparently happened on the Dell product forums, e.g. here for the 9343.

It is quite likely that this is a hardware issue because there are various videos and posts of people fixing it by removing their space bar key and bending the metal "railings" that the bar clips on to. I've personally removed the key and experimented a little, and it is sometimes possible to trigger a space press without pressing down on the rubber dome. That is likely the source of the issue.

I personally don't feel comfortable bending things in there so I'd rather find a software solution to it.  One of Dell's official support articles mentions bounce keys explicitly, but oddly enough that doesn't seem to capture it for me.

Dell also occasionally claims that a BIOS update fixes this issue and it usually does for a subset of users, but it never completely goes away (most likely they just attempt to apply some filtering heuristics similar to what I want to do on the X layer).

Hi,

I'm getting 2 different errors when running dmesg, i hope someone can help me understand their meaning, and whether i should ignore them or try to fix them.

The first one is related to the ath10k driver:

[1.884622] ath10k_pci 0000:3a:00.0: Direct firmware load for ath10k/pre-cal-pci-0000:3a:00.0.bin failed with error -2

This is not causing me problems however, as i understand it automatically falls back to using firmware-4.bin. Would be nice to find a solution to clear this error anyway.

I'm not sure what the second error is related to, from a quick search i'm guessing intel graphics?

[drm:skl_set_power_well [i915]] *ERROR* power well 2 disable timeout

Thanks.

Edit: After following these instructions on the wiki I no longer see the second error.

I'm getting the same. The wifi seems to work and be stable for a few days, and I'm getting the speed my ISP provides, so I guess it's not too important.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

I've been working a bit on idle power consumption and gotten it below 2w on idle. This is a 9360 with i7-7560, 16GB, FHD and I replaced the Toshiba SSD with a Samsung EVO 960 512GB.

I've installed TLP, added the NVMe powersaving patch and I'm using these settings in i915.conf:

magg@MaggXPS ~]$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/i915.conf
options i915 enable_rc6=1 enable_fbc=1 modset=1 enable_psr=2

Any advice for other things to tune? It's not possible to undervolt these CPUs from Linux currently, right?

PS: After about two days of tuning the computer suddenly loses power if I'm pulling the power cord. It happens even if I'm in BIOS, so I can't imagine there is something wrong with my TLP settings or such. Waiting for Dell to get back to me on my petition, I guess the battery is screwed. Any thoughts on fixes are welcome smile

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

Magg, I am really excited about your values around 2w on idle. I have read about similar values in the arch wiki (2.3w).
The best I could manage was 3.2w, with wifi and bluetooth off, enable_psr=1,pcie_aspm=force and display on lowest setting, as well as with the nvme patch applied.

How much difference did replacing the ssd make? Is the thoshiba one more power hungry?
I compiled a vanilla 4.9 kernel myself ... does the arch kernel you are using (which version btw?) have other patches applied besides the nvme patch? Did you adjust anything special in the bios?
What is your tlp config? What was the display brightness when you were measuring?

Powertop does not give me any culprint ... it says "Good" everywhere and all devices show extremly low percentages.

I also tried on Windows and there idling is around 1.8W, so I am a bit disappointed to be stuck at 3.2W, any ideas or help would be appreciated.

I am using the 9360 FHD i5 version (9360-3707), Bios version 1.0.7.

Ps: I am testing this out on debian sid, did not have time to test arch, but the distro should not really matter for that, right?

I should have mentioned that the < 2w is with the display off wink What do you get if you put "sleep <SecsBeforeScreenTurnoff>; powerstat" ?

I cannot get new readings until the battery issue is resolved, I'm in communication with Dell regarding it.

I use the 4.10 kernel with the only patch being the nvme power saving one. (I read on the patch github page that it has been included in a 4.11 rc, so I guess we won't need it when 4.11 is the packaged kernel.

Unfortunatly I didn't test the Toshiba SSD under the same conditions as the Samsung, so I cant be sure. I installed windows to upgrade the firmware of the Samsung too.

TLP is stock config that comes with the Arch package.

What tool are you using in Windows?

I guess you could upgrade the bios, it shouldn't harm at least. Mine is 1.3.2.

Regarding distro, I don't think there should be too much of a difference, but you never know. Hard to compare w/o the same setup.

Will post more stats as soon as the power issues are resolved! Might even reinstall the Toshiba and test that.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

As for the Windows measurements, I am using BatteryBar, I can't tell if the values are accurate, any suggestions for comparable tools welcome.
As you can see, I am getting extremly low values in idle ... without turning the display off:
r8ca6h.jpg

In flight mode even less:
sxipms.jpg

Even with display off powerstat reports a usage of 3.0 watts on an nvme patched 4.9 kernel (tlp, enable_psr=1,pcie_aspm=force).

Where can I find the default tlp config file for arch online?

Edit: Upgrading bios to latest version did not have any effect.

Re: Dell XPS 13 Late 2016 9360 Kaby Lake 7th Gen

I tried on Arch ... with the parameters of Magg and the linux-nvme from AUR, ... still ... I do not get under 3W in idle, any ideas why this could be?
I am measuring invoking powertop in virtual Terminals ... with no display manager or anything graphical running, tlp working, powertops reports "Good" in the tuneable section, rcp6 and other options enabled for i915, powertop shows C10 state over 99% for the processor.
What could be the difference with my machine?

Magg, how are/were the values for you without turning the display off? Have you disabled anything special in Bios? (I have disabled the thunderbold boot support).
I tried disabling the sd-card reader and the camera, did not make any great difference.

I am a bit disappointed by those big differences ... (my results compared to Windows, and other Peoples powertop results of ~2W, which I have only read in arch related sources ... some ubuntu folks report 4/5W on idle.).

Is anyone else experiencing issues with suspend & resume after a recent kernel update? In 4/5 cases the machine is frozen after resuming.

Somebody asked me on IRC if I was seeing this, too, and now I am!

No I have not experienced this :-).

As for my own issue: I got another XPS 13, same specs, but with a 128Gb Toshiba SSD.

Now the strange thing: On the machine with 128GB, Linux recognizes the SSD in RAID mode!! Power consumption is significantly less!!
The difference seems to be Sata link management ... on my 256Gb machine the "/sys/class/scsi_host/host*/link_power_management_policy" entries are not present ... so this seems to be the culprit with my higher power consumption.
I am still investigating this, I will post lshw etc. if people are interested.

I noticed some other interesting differences: The built in batteries differ (different Vendor) ... on my 256 GB machine the battery is more recent (from November 2016 vs. October 2016), but it shows me 1.3% battery wear, compared to the other one which reports 0.0%, both machines are new.

EDIT: Getting 1.6W in idle now on the 128GB version, with display on low brightness. AMAZING difference between those models!
Another note regarding the 128GB model: As I said, RAID is enabled and contrary to the 256GB model, the ssd is labeled /dev/sda!

I ended up experiencing this exact same issue. As far as I can tell the problem results from:

 enable_rc6=1 in /etc/modprobe/i915.conf

When I have it set, I always get freezes on resume. I am running on kernel 4.10.3-1. Changing it to enable_rc6=0 fixes it for me.

EDIT:
Installing xf86-video-intel-git per #74 and #75 resolves my suspend issues, and allows enable_rc6=1 to be set.
