[SOLVED] Audio output device on Motherboard not showing up as device

Fresh Arch install here. I have this motherboard: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/Z270-GAMING-M7.html which has onboard audio ports.

I have installed the following audio arch packages

alsa-utils
pulseaudio
paprefs
pavucontrol

Yet when I go into the Pulse audio panel, my motherboard is not listed as an "Output device". The only output device I see is my Monitor (which is listed as HDMI / DisplayPort (plugged in). All sound is playing out my monitor (Sounds horrible) and not my speakers.

What should I be looking for?

Re: [SOLVED] Audio output device on Motherboard not showing up as device

Your profile of the MB card is set to only show the mic only. Check the "Configuration" tab in pavucontrol or  use

pacmd set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3 output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo

to change that fact

Re: [SOLVED] Audio output device on Motherboard not showing up as device

Thank you for help! How are you able to tell this, what in the pacmd output gives you this info?

Re: [SOLVED] Audio output device on Motherboard not showing up as device

This here corresponds to all information pulseaudio has about your card (for less verbosity and to only have that part you can use pacmd list-cards to have it a bit cleaner)

index: 1
	name: <alsa_card.pci-0000_00_1f.3>
	driver: <module-alsa-card.c>
	owner module: 7
	properties:
		alsa.card = "0"
		alsa.card_name = "HDA Intel PCH"
		alsa.long_card_name = "HDA Intel PCH at 0xdf420000 irq 140"
		alsa.driver_name = "snd_hda_intel"
		device.bus_path = "pci-0000:00:1f.3"
		sysfs.path = "/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.3/sound/card0"
		device.bus = "pci"
		device.vendor.id = "8086"
		device.vendor.name = "Intel Corporation"
		device.product.id = "a2f0"
		device.form_factor = "internal"
		device.string = "0"
		device.description = "Built-in Audio"
		module-udev-detect.discovered = "1"
		device.icon_name = "audio-card-pci"
	profiles:
		input:analog-stereo: Analog Stereo Input (priority 60, available: unknown)
		output:analog-stereo: Analog Stereo Output (priority 6000, available: unknown)
		output:analog-stereo+input:analog-stereo: Analog Stereo Duplex (priority 6060, available: unknown)
		output:analog-surround-21: Analog Surround 2.1 Output (priority 800, available: unknown)
		output:analog-surround-21+input:analog-stereo: Analog Surround 2.1 Output + Analog Stereo Input (priority 860, available: unknown)
		output:analog-surround-40: Analog Surround 4.0 Output (priority 700, available: unknown)
		output:analog-surround-40+input:analog-stereo: Analog Surround 4.0 Output + Analog Stereo Input (priority 760, available: unknown)
		output:analog-surround-41: Analog Surround 4.1 Output (priority 800, available: unknown)
		output:analog-surround-41+input:analog-stereo: Analog Surround 4.1 Output + Analog Stereo Input (priority 860, available: unknown)
		output:analog-surround-50: Analog Surround 5.0 Output (priority 700, available: unknown)
		output:analog-surround-50+input:analog-stereo: Analog Surround 5.0 Output + Analog Stereo Input (priority 760, available: unknown)
		output:analog-surround-51: Analog Surround 5.1 Output (priority 800, available: unknown)
		output:analog-surround-51+input:analog-stereo: Analog Surround 5.1 Output + Analog Stereo Input (priority 860, available: unknown)
		output:iec958-stereo: Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output (priority 5500, available: unknown)
		output:iec958-stereo+input:analog-stereo: Digital Stereo (IEC958) Output + Analog Stereo Input (priority 5560, available: unknown)
		off: Off (priority 0, available: unknown)
	active profile: <input:analog-stereo>
	sources:
		alsa_input.pci-0000_00_1f.3.analog-stereo/#1: Built-in Audio Analog Stereo

we get the card name from the name: part the available profiles from that list of profiles, and the profile currently selected from that second to  last line regarding the active profile.

From that one can piece together the pacmd set-card-profile command which changes the profile accordingly. If this is solved for you, don't forget to edit your inital post's title to mark as [SOLVED]

Re: [SOLVED] Audio output device on Motherboard not showing up as device

This did solve my isue, thanks so much v1del. I'd like to note that the pavucontrol GUI could be more intuitive: instead of just not showing the output device at all, it could show it greyed out or something or some other indication it has a profile set. I never would have known this.

Re: [SOLVED] Audio output device on Motherboard not showing up as device

Well those profiles are there to help remove potential clutter from the available sinks (e.g. I have the HDMI output disabled precisely because it clears up space on the relevant pages) As mentioned whenever you feel like something is missing from the other two pages you should check out the configuration tab, which will list the available profiles and whatever that is set to.
