[Solved] Laptop gets a little bit too hot

Hello guys!

I dual-boot with Windows 10, and under Windows you can feel that the laptop is much cooler, while on Linux it is noticably warmer (idling). The laptop is a Asus GL552VW. According to sensors "pch_skylake-virtual-0" gets  59 °C, I'm not sure what it is but I think that may be the reason this machine gets so hot.

I would look into powertop and check if you are making use of all (or most) of the cpu's C-States and Package C-States, although that might not make a big difference.

Another thing I would be more inclined to suspect is the discrete gpu, is it really being turned off? There are a couple of messages like this "ACPI Warning: \_SB.PCI0.PEG0.PEGP._DSM: Argument #4 type mismatch - Found [Buffer], ACPI requires [Package] (20160930/nsarguments-95)" which seem to be related to the discrete gpu, it might be nothing but might also be a clue.

Just out of curiosity, do you really need to use 'acpi_osi=! acpi_osi="Windows 2009" pci=noaer' as kernel parameters? At first glance I'd say the 'pci=noaer' parameter might hide some errors or useful information, but if you really need to use it then you probably want to clarify why, if nothing else it might help someone else later on if this is not documented anywhere else.

As far as I know there is no way telling if the GPU is turned off for sure, but running

cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch

returns "0000:01:00.0 OFF". Back then I searched for that ACPI Warning, and I found one can ignore it.

Yes, I need those parameters, beacuse without those my PC freezes or my fans just go crazy and turn on fully. (I guess it's related to this: https://github.com/Bumblebee-Project/Bu … -234494238) Without the "pci=noaer" parameter I used to get some errors, but I cannot reproduce them with the current kernel.

Apart from trying to find out if the gpu is really turned off the only thing I notice is that you are not getting to package c-states lower than pc2 (left column), but I'm not sure that is the cause of your problem. You should still look into it though, as intel says long term reliability could be affected if all c-states are not used.

One thing I noticed is if I enable SATA power magagement in powertop, my CPU can get into pc3, and that's indeed helps in terms of temperature. So I'm quite sure that's the cause of my problem.

Then try changing other tunables and see if you can get it to go into deeper package c-states, although you should be aware that some tunables can have side effects, such as usb devices going to sleep and not waking up or sata errors[1] (I'm not sure if these can cause data loss so make backups).

Other settings have no effect on package c-states, however disabling card reader and LAN (cannot be disabled separately) in bios and enabling SATA power management allow the CPU to get into pc7, but I don't have internet this way, so it's not really an option, but maybe a clue.

Yes, not having internet defeats the point of lower temperature. The only thing I can suggest is that you check if there are any bios/fw updates for your laptop as an update might change something.

Other than that I would check if the drivers for those pieces of hardware have any option that might help, but from a quick glance I'd say you might not be lucky.
