No sound output

Hello All,

I am relatively new to Arch Linux and have been enjoying it, but recently there has been no sound coming out from my laptop's speakers.

I guess it started happening after I tried to pair it with my bluetooth headsets but it kept on saying "Connected" but then immediately it would say  "Disconnect"

I cannot post any logs or output of any commands because I unfortuntely do not know where to start.

The audio in Windows works so definitely isn't a hardware issue, and if I try to plug in my earphones those do not work either.

I believe I am using these "Pulseaudio" drivers if it is a good starting point. Reading the wiki I did try "pulseaudio -k && pulseaudio --start" but it did not help.

Please advice an Arch noob to diagnose issue.

Thanks

Re: No sound output

Hello,
Which desktop environment do you use?
Are you sure PulseAudio is installed ? (write pacman -Qs pulseaudio in a terminal)
Can you give us the output of "systemctl status pulseaudio" (write it in a terminal) ?

Re: No sound output

The desktop environment I am using is GNOME (version 3 i think).

Yes pulseaudio is installed:
libpulse 10.0-2
pulseaudio 10.0-2
pulseaudio-alsa 2-3

The output of that command is:
"Unit pulseaudio.service could not be found."

Oh dear sounds like that should of been different.

Interestingly if I suspend the machine and resume it, the audio is back. Plus sometimes after a restart there are no problems but other times, no audio sad

Re: No sound output

Don't worry about the service not found message, the correct invocation would be

systemctl --user status pulseaudio

since pulse is an user service. Should the problem reappear post the output of said status command and

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

Re: No sound output

That all looks correct from the OP I thought pulse wouldn't start but it does,  what's the output of

pacmd list-cards
pacmd list-sinks
pacmd list-sink-inputs #While playing something

in that case?

Re: No sound output

Use [ code ] tags not [ quote ] tags when pasting command output. Well the output of these does look alright right now as well. Should the problem reappear repost the last 2 of the pacmd commands and the fuser command

The problem has occurred again sad

I am thinking maybe the problem lies with me dualbooting between Windows 10 and Arch. I was playing some audio before restarting and jumping to Arch.

Re: No sound output

Hmmm this all looks correct still, what about

amixer -c0
dmesg | grep snd

the fact that you mention Windows might help a bit, is it somehow possible to limit the possibilities further, i.e. does it only happen after a reboot from within Windows followed by a boot into linux (or the other way around going into Windows and rebooting then works or something along those lines) or/and is it preventable by a full shutdown followed by a cold boot as opposed to choosing the restart option? If one of these others (only happens on reboot from Windows or similar) maybe a BIOS/UEFI update might be helpful

Re: No sound output

Apparently I don't have a command called "amixer" not sure why as I installed the pulseaudio-alsa package hmm

dmesg | grep snd:

[ 1.983482] snd_hda_codec_realtek hdaudioC0D0: Internal Mic=0x12

It appears that restarting straight from Windows might be the issue here. Will do some more testing in the coming days to hopefully sort this out once and for all.

Re: No sound output

amixer is part of alsa-utils (for the future look at pacman's file options in order to find out to what package a certain file or command maps to)

Re: No sound output

Try installing the following packages:

 sudo pacman -S alsa-firmware alsa-utils alsa-plugins pulseaudio-alsa pulseaudio

After I installed them, the sound on my dell xps-13 works fine.
