Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

You lack virtualbox-guest-utils which contains the Xorg driver. that said it still attempts to load the generic modesetting driver and gets as far as having nothing to do, so additionally it seems you haven't defined anything to start within an ~/.xinitrc which you should do as well

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

Whatever you want X to start. Right now X starts up successfully but since you haven't told it to start anything it closes itself again since no client is connecting. If virtualbox-guest-utils is installed, have you also made sure to enable hardware acceleration in the virtualbox host application?

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

I have twm installed. Also yes 3D acceleration is enabled in Virtualbox, but not 2D video acceleration because it can only be enable for Windows guest

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

There is no more vboxvideo ddx in Arch.

I see nothing wrong with the log posted. As V1del said, you just need to tell it to actually do something. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xinit#xinitrc

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

So I copied the default .xinitrc from /etc/X11/xinit, and modify it to run Cinnamon. It works, I have graphics output and everything, but it´s still in software rendering mode. Does it have something to do with the fact that vboxvideo could still not load?

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

Are the virtualbox host modules for windows the same version as the vbox guest modules in the archlinux guest ?

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

The host is Windows 7 with VirtualBox 5.1.18, and the guest have virtualbox-guest-modules-arch and virtualbox-guest-utils 5.1.16-1
Also I have a radeon HD 5450 with the latest driver.

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

Arch has virtaulbox-guest-modules & utils 5.1.18 also , try updating the guest with pacman -Syu .

If that doesn't solve the issues, post full guest dmesg .

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

I updated the packages this morning, and still got the error about the vboxvideo module.

Here's a paste of the full guest dmesg, after trying to launch a startx

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

No clues in dmesg, everything looks to work as intended.

Double check your settings on the host, maybe try to have virtualbox provide different virtual hardware to the guest.

I updated the packages this morning, and still got the error about the vboxvideo module.

If you're talking about the ddx, I'll say again that there is no more vboxvideo ddx in Arch. If you're talking about the kernel module, that's different.

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

@Lone_Wolf : Now I got a warning from virtualbox when I enable the 3D Acceleration : "The virtual machine is set up to use hardware graphics acceleration. However the host system dos not currently provide this, so you will not be able to start the machine". The weird thing is that I can start the guest without any problem, and that warning was not there last week.

@Scimmia : I'm talking about the kernel module

You haven't posted any errors related to the vboxvideo kernel module, so I have no idea what you're talking about

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

Scimmia,

his version of vbox guest modules were not the most recent one.
Bl4ckb0ne was giving info that he had updated, the guest module snow matched the host version  but the same error was still reported by xorg.

You are correct that there's no virtualbox xorg DDX driver aka xf86-video-vbox-something .
I have no idea how oracle does it, but every xorg log from an AL vbox guest where HW accelaration worked had atleast one thing 1 common :
xorg didn't complain about not finding a vboxvideo module.

In my opinion xorg complaining about not finding vboxvideo module just means something is wrong with HW acceleration.

---------------
Bl4ckb0ne, this is beginning to look like a problem on host or between host and guest .
Any chance you can try the AL guest VM on another virtualbox installation ?

An alternative might be to try the vm in a vmware player install to narrow down the problem.

I'm not sure how many more ways I can say this.

THERE IS NO VBOXVIDEO DDX/XORG MODULE

Lone_Wolf wrote:

There was no error reported by xorg. It didn't find the vboxvideo driver, but see above.

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

Update : I installed a new driver because the one I had didn't seems to be the right one. With the new driver I got rid of the virtualbox driver, but I still have the same error in my Xorg.0.log.

I will try with VMware shortly and give you another update.

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

Not the problem, a big red flashing neonsign : HW acceleration is not working

I'll try to describe my logic .

A = HW acceleration works , boolean value
B = xorg does complain about missing vboxvideo module, boolean value

A = false, B = false :  different problem then OP has
A = False, B = true :  OP situation
A = true, B = false : problem solved
A = true, B = true : never happens in my experience

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

And "B" can never be "false" as, once again, it does not exist in Arch.

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

UPDATE : I converted my vm from virtualbox to vmware, installed the package xf86-video-vmware . So far it seems to be working, but when I launched the VM with 3d acceleration I encountered huge display artifacts and a crash from cinnamon.

Here are the two Xorg logs.

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

That warning you mentioned in post #13 might be pretty key. Are your graphics drivers set up correctly ? Don't use the factory-provided graphics drivers actually get them from you graphics card vendor the drivers shipped with most Windows OEM systems have crippled OpenGL support. Is hardware virtualization enabled in your BIOS/UEFI?

Re: Cannot startx on Arch guest with vboxvideo

I suddenly got the feeling we overlooked something basic, and checked for other virtualbox pacakges.

The file xorg is looking for is in virtualbox-guest-utils package was that installed ?

Note : it's a dri module like those provided by mesa, not a DDX driver.

Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd.
