I was told to make a separate topic.
I get no text in Medieval 2: Total War. But it's only this specific game, in every other game fonts appear just fine.
As OP said, I also installed steam-fonts and did the Arial workaround, but still nothing. I even tried if removing fontconfig within the game folder does anything, and still nothing.
So basically no-text troubleshooting didn't fix my problem, and I have no idea what to try next.

I'm actually having this same exact issue. Have tried reinstalling fonts, tried the fontconfig solution... still nothing. I have not gotten the fonts to work as of yet.

Well now I at least know, it's not just me, or something I did.
I'm currently not in any real need to get it working, but maybe when I'll feel like troubleshooting it, I might try to find a way to fix this.

I also got the exact same issue. I do not really know where to start ... I suppose, some font isn't installed ...

Ah, I think I've fixed it, after much googling. This is possibly the most arcane thing I've ever seen.
There is a file in ~/.local/share/feral-interactive/Medieval II Total War/ called 'preferences.' This is an XML file, and in that file, you will see the following line:
<value name="UsePBOSurfaces" type="integer">1</value>
Change the 1 to a 0, and voila. Your fonts have returned.

Thanks Fredo699! This change also works for font or text issues in Empire: Total War!
